  1. FG BLOCK

  2. FIELD GOAL P.A.T. BLOCK PHILOSOPHY: When the FG/PAT block team is operating, our opponents are attempting to put points on the score board. This in itself should be reason enough to emphasize the importance of this phase. We will attempt to apply physical and mental pressure on the opponent and remain sound against a fake attempt. There will be varying degrees of risk as they apply to the situation. We will design our blocks to take advantage of an opponents protection technique or a particular vulnerable player. INSIDE BLOCK SCHEMES: The schemes are designed to stress the Center(Giant)/Guards(Bull)/Tackles(Beach). We will attack a single protector with 2 defenders inside shoulder to outside shoulder & drive to the flight line to block the kick. OUTSIDE BLOCK SCHEMES: The schemes are designed to pressure the TE and wing area. We will outnumber the opponent at the point of attack and stress their technique. BLOCKED FG/PAT S IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OCCUR WHEN A RUSHER IS ABLE TO GET 3 YARDS DEEP & PENETRATE INTO THE FLIGHT LINE GO UP TO BLOCK KICKS. BLOCK POINT NO RUSH BLOCK POINT AFTER 3 YARDS OF PENETRATION IN FLIGHT LINE 3 YARDS TRIANGLE PRINCIPLE LOS 1

  6. Front Line Blocking Techniques to Master SINGLE Block: See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at 30 yard line flip hips and peddle carrying eyes & hands low, reel defender in , strike with wide arms on shoulders of defender, accelerate feet on contact & finish block with hips in the hole. 1. 2. LOOK OFF SINGLE Block: (Middle return & used to help set up trap blocks) See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at 30 yard line flip hips and peddle carrying eyes & hands low, LOOKING OFF immediate inside defender without losing vision on your man, reel defender in , strike with wide arms on shoulders of defender, accelerate feet on contact & finish block with hips in the hole 3. REVERSE SINGLE Block: (Used front side of bounce/break it schemes ) See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at 30 yard line flip hips and peddle carrying eyes & hands low, reel defender in , ABSORB & SQUARE UP DEFENDER enticing him to win inside to ball, strike with wide arms on shoulders of defender, accelerate feet on contact & finish block with hips in the hole. 4. See the ball off the tee, short set defenders inside shoulder & strike him forcing him outside, or flatten on the kick to next inside defender s hip, (hand the baton), to gain inside leverage on your assignment, flip and give ground vertically down the field with eyes on defender reeling him in as you converge. Once at the POA, or defender begins to squeeze to returner, LOCK on to defender & run him by the returner. Force defender to go back door there is no flip & peddle stage. CIRCLE Block: (Used by smaller players to block big defenders) 5. SIFT Block: (Used to widen 1st defender & climb to assigned defender) See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at 30 yard line flip hips and peddle carrying eyes & hands low, reel defender in , strike 1stdefender widening him away from return, then climb up field to final assignment, strike with wide arms on shoulders of defender, accelerate feet on contact & finish block with hips in the hole. 7. Front Line Blocking Schemes to Master (continued) 6. DOUBLE TEAM Blocks: (CATCH, CUFF, TAG, CIG, FAT etc) POST PLAYER: See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at 30 yard line flip hips & peddle carrying eyes & hands low, SQUARE UP DEFENDER, set a HARD POST at the 25 yard line, strike with wide arms on shoulders of defender, accelerate feet on contact & drive defender keeping him on his feet. See the ball off the tee, cover the kick for distance & direction, at the 40 yard line flip & find the POST PLAYER, converge to up field shoulder of POST player with eyes on assigned defender, time up the double team striking & driving the defender as defender makes contact with the POST player creating movement away from the direction of the return. DRIVE the defender within the confines of the double team until the backside safety, (R1/L1), appears in your up field vision then sift off to safety & block him. SIFT TO SAFETY DRIVE PLAYER: (Secure the dbl team, gain movement, climb to safety) SAF GET MOVEMENT DRIVE DEF POST Note: If defender ATTACKS the DRIVE , the drive now becomes the POST player and the original POST simply locks on the defender and drives the defender in the direction he is attacking use his momentum against him. Bottom line the POST & DRIVE switch responsibility & get movement on this defender giving the returner a BUTT to vertically cut off. SECURE THE DBL!! PAGE 2

  8. Wedge Blocking Techniques to Master Middle Upback (MUB): Responsible for setting the Wedge See the ball off the tee, get your eyes on the returner & cover to where the returner is setting up to catch the football, keeping eyes on returner at all times. Set the wedge 10 to 12 yards from returner while presenting your return side hand to the ROVER. CAN NEVER GO BEYOND THE 10 YARD LINE OR OUTSIDE THE # S TO SET THE WEDGE!! Once ball enters the catch pocket of the returner give the GO call. Allow the Rover to lead you up field to your assigned defender, staying together as long as possible. Carry eyes & hands low as you move up the field to maintain good body position. Strike through the defender, run your feet, & finish block with hips in the hole. 1. 2. Rover (ROV): Responsible for leading wedge upfield to assigned blockers See the ball off the tee, get your eyes on the MUB and converge to the hand he is presenting to you. Lock hands with MUB & immediately get your eyes upfield to ass of dbl team identifying assigned defenders to block. On Go call from the MUB lead the wedge up field full off ass of dbl team block 1st threat off return side shoulder. Carry eyes & hands low to maintain good body position. Strike through the defender, run your feet, & finish block with hips in the hole. 3. END: (Maintain 4 yard distance between self & MUB setting wedge) See the ball off the tee, get your eyes on the RET and converge to a spot 4 yards directly behind the MUB s wedge landmark. (5 YARD LINE IS AN EXCELLENT LANDMARK WITH ANY BALL KICKED IN EZ) Keep eyes on hip of MUB & on GO call work directly up the field behind the MUB while getting your eyes ahead to assigned defender. Carry eyes & hands low to maintain good body position. Strike through the defender, run your feet, & finish block with hips in the hole. 4. Off Returner: (Jump the kickers approach Triangle Reads) See the ball off the tee, cover the kick maintaining an 8 yard cushion between self and returner. If the ball is kicked beyond the game plan boundaries set to bring the ball out throw both arms at returner alerting him to take a touchback. Once returner secures the catch attack up field with the wedge attempting to stay on the hip of the ROVER as long as possible before coming off & blocking the MDM or climbing to the unblocked safety. (R1/L1) PAGE 3

  9. Wedge Blocking Techniques to Master (continued) Returner: PRE KICK: Win Pre-snap through film study of kicker get a jump on where the ball will be kicked. Know his walk-off triangle tendencies Big = Left kickoff, Small = Right kickoff, tempo to the ball for mortars, squibs, etc. Align 5 deep in EZ to give self a chance to catch the ball coming forward center field technique. 5. THE CATCH: Break for the ball as soon as you get the direction off the tee. Track at full speed while reading the distance of the ball. Get your body behind the ball and set your feet. Keep your body square while keeping the ball in front of you. Bend slightly at the knees and waist. Get your hands out. Do not extend your arms away from your body; keep your elbows in and use your forearms and your chest to form a pocket. Focus on the tip of the football, and catch the ball with an emphasis on your eyes and hands . Catch the ball about shoulder height so you can soften the reception and bring the ball in. Catch the ball with forward lean look the ball into the tuck position with your eyes . The catch occurs with your eyes, hands will follow the tracking of the football by your eyes WORDS OR BLANK . RETURN STAGE: ACCELERATE full speed up the field ATTACKING the outside hip of the END to the side of the return. Think of being in a relay & you are exchanging a baton with the END. This vertical track forces the defenders to declare to the wedge their coverage intentions. Run to that hip of the END until the coverage forces you to cut vertically up the field to daylight . 4 man wedge = 5 hole principle R1 R5 MDM 4 R4 R3 3 2 5 ROV MUB OR 1 END PAGE 4 R

  14. Coverage Avoid/Shed Rules & Techniques(vs single blocks): We must avoid first level blocking shemes with proper techniques. BACK DOOR STACK: ( Win AWAYfrom wedge tilt ) Close fast on blocker, weave inside & vertically toward him forcing him to settle his feet. Step on his toes & backdoor rip or swipe past him & stack vertically to the returner FRONT DOOR STACK: ( Win TOthe wedge tilt ) Close fast on blocker, weave outside & vertically away from him forcing him to settle his feet. Step on his toes and avoid blocker in direction in which he is coming from. Let his momentum carry him by using a combination of weave technique or change of pace & then swipe or club him by & immediately stack vertically to the ret. TWO HAND STACK: ( Square up/Strike/Tear off defender to ball ) Close fast on blocker, weave inside & vertically toward him forcing him to settle his feet. DEFEAT HIM WITH POWER. Step on his toes, and strike his breast plates with 2 hands squeezing grapes & driving blocker into the direction of the return for 3 steps.
