Safeguarding life has always been
forefront of the IOGP mission.
Industry fatalities have highlighted
controls/ safeguards that could help
save lives.
Supporting assurance of safe work
execution prior to starting work should
help achieve a step change
improvement in preventing fatalities
and serious injuries.
Start Work Checks are intended to
supplement an existing management
system of controls.
A Human Performance tool to help support workers implement the Life-Saving Rules and prevent fatalities in our Industry
These are designed to be used by the people performing work, ensuring controls/safeguards are verified prior to stating work

The SWC template – how to use it

Column 1 has the check to be performed
by the ‘person performing work’
Column 2 provides guidance on how to
perform the check
Last two columns can be used to mark the
item as ‘checked’
Bottom row can be used the verifier to
mark that all control/safeguards have
been checked
NOTE: Column 2 is editable in the IOGP provided
templates, if you’ve changed it, it may be worth
indicating this to your audience

What will success look like?
The workforce:
Consistently recognizes hazards that can kill
them and works with a sustained sense of
vulnerability
Is competent to verify controls/safeguards that
will keep them alive
Relies on Life-Saving Rules SWCs as a
personal life saving measure
It is a cultural norm that:
On every job with potential for fatality, a SWCs
will be completed prior to work beginning
Work will not proceed until SWCs are
positively, visually verified
Immediate action is taken to address the
situation if a SWC can’t be completed
Work that is paused because SWCs can’t
be completed is important information to
help us improve

A tool designed to support workers in implementing Life-Saving Rules to prevent fatalities in the industry. It outlines checks for activities like Hot Work, Mechanical Lifting, Working at Height, and more. Workers are empowered with Stop Work Authority and Start Work Authority to ensure essential safeguards are in place before commencing work, with a focus on preventing fatalities and serious injuries. Success is defined by workers consistently recognizing hazards, verifying controls, and adhering to a culture where work doesn't proceed without completing the necessary safety verifications.
