Shaftesbury High School Virtual Open House Social Studies
Grade 9 Canada in the Contemporary World Students develop an understanding of Canadian society, its regional diversity, and the roles and responsibilities of Canadian citizens. *This course is offered to students as a semester or full year program.
Grade 10 Geographic Issues of the 21st Century Students develop an understanding of the relationship between people and their environment. Students examine the following themes: geographic literacy, natural resources, food from the land, industry and trade, and urban places.
American History Students develop an understanding of the political and social history of the United States of America. The course highlights the important events and issues in American history, focusing upon events from the founding of the nation to the emergence of the USA as a world power in the twentieth century. *This option course is open to students in all grades.
Students will focus on the history of Canada from pre- contact to the present. Grade 11: Canadian History Students will gain knowledge, skills and values necessary to become responsible, democratic citizens who are engaged in local, national and global communities.
Cinema as a Witness to Modern History Students will have the opportunity to develop critical media literacy through exploration of cinema enrich their knowledge and understanding of world history since the beginning of the 20th century apply the concepts of historical thinking using of a variety of film genres in documentary and dramatic cinema *This option course is open to students in all grades.
Current Topics in First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Studies Students explore histories, traditions, cultures, worldviews, and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples in Canada and worldwide. Students develop values, critical thinking, and inquiry skills, that will enable them to better understand the past and present realities of Indigenous peoples. *This option course is open to students in all grades.
Grade 12 Grade 12 Global Issues: Citizenship and Sustainability Students study and understand complex and sometimes critical global issues facing society including: sustainability the interdependence between the environment, social, political and economic systems. What is required to think and act as a literate citizen committed to social justice
