Industry forecast anticipates emissions to increase by up to 300% by 2050. Aviation, like shipping, is not covered by the Paris Agreement Outside specialist/trade press there is little coverage of the sector ICAO the International Civil Aviation Organisation is one of the UN s most opaque bodies And yet the decisions taken there will have an impact on the sector s emissions for years to come 2

Covid Covid- -19 and aviation s climate plan 19 and aviation s climate plan The sector agreed to make all growth in international flights after 2020 carbon neutral, from a baseline of 2019-2020 BUT 2020 exceptional year: less flights = less emissions = toughen the industry s climate goal (slightly) Industry lobbied ICAO to change the baseline to 2019 Review in 2022 EU conceded to the baseline change Gives airlines a free pass to pollute for the next three to six years 6

What green recovery? What green recovery? Bailouts with no strings attached NGO tracker estimates European airlines have sought 33 billion in government bailouts, without binding environmental conditions French government s 7billion bailout to AirFrance, includes some environmental conditions: o Cutting its carbon intensity by 10% from today s levels in 2030, o halving CO2 emissions from flights within mainland France, o and use at least 2% of alternative jet fuel by 2025. 7
