Fostering Inclusive Classrooms for Students of Color Convening

This convening by USC Equity Alliance focuses on fostering inclusive classrooms for students of color. The CHC team shared insights from a survey on university students, addressing issues like classroom racism, curricular erasure, and lack of faculty diversity. Participants were encouraged to reflect on past racial mistakes and consider strategies for creating engaging learning environments for all students. Ideas from the event will be integrated into professional development activities. Additional resources for school leaders are provided.

Classroom Racism Curricular Erasure One-Sided, Deficit Representation Forced Spokespersonship Being Confused for the Other Student Being Surprised by brilliance Mispronouncing and Refusing to Learn Student Names Shortage of Faculty of Color No Consequence for Racist Instructors No Acknowledgement of Racist Statements

5. Ask Yourself Have you made a racial mistake or poorly handled a racial situation in your classroom (or in an out-of-class interaction if you are not a faculty member). What are you doing to make your learning environment engaging for all students?
