Adjusting to the impacts of COVID-19, senior students face restrictions on college and military interactions, reduced internship opportunities, limited testing availability, and virtual learning environments. Despite challenges, resources, advice, and tools are provided to support students in meeting graduation requirements, exploring college and career options, and pursuing military or post-secondary paths.

  2. How Is This Year Different? Due to COVID, many unforseeable things have occurred. How does this affect you? 1. College & Military Reps currently not permitted in the building 2. PFE/Internship opportunities may have been eliminated 3. SAT/ACT testing limited or not available 4. In-person meetings are no longer possible 5. College visits might not be possible Impact 1. Virtual Meetings are still happening, check the Events & College Visits TAB (Counselor Webpage) 2. Still explore careers, reach out to employers and ask for a Q&A, research fields online 3. Check for future dates. BUT, most all schools have had to WAIVE SAT/ACT requirement 4. All organizations have adapted to provide virtual opportunities and online information 5. TONS of virtual opportunities. Check with the schools directly or visit the College/Career TAB Solution (Counselor Webpage)

Military Bound: Discuss plans w/ family Determine branch Active Duty- Army, Marine, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard Reserve-Army, Marine, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard National Guard- Army or Air Contact a recruiter. Use the recruiter finder tool on each branch s website. Mrs. Fink might also have an updated contact. ASVAB (military & college bound) OCT 14.   6. College Bound: Wait, wait, tell me more! Want to learn more about a particular college??? Thank you, COVID, for 1 thing, and that is virtual EVERYTHING! Select your list of schools (4-6 is a good number) Use college match programs: BigFuture (Collegeboard) Petersons.com Cappex.com Narrow list by: Good Fit schools- Academically right & affordable Reach schools- Higher tier, tougher to get in or out of price range Safety- Guaranteed admission & affordable ALWAYS CONSIDER: Size Location Cost $ Do your research! Virtual College Exploration week, NACAC Virtual College Fair, PACAC Virtual Sessions-Keystone State, PA Colleges. Or a College Rep virtual session through HAHS or visit the college websites directly for events! College reps are now hosting virtual sessions! Check the list often, for schools of interest!   7. College Application Process Steps to apply Follow college application directions and know what is required. Counselors are not informed about specific college requirments. Do your research! Keep track of login info. & check email often Know deadlines Merit scholarship deadlines end early! Early Decision/Early Action includes completed FAFSA Apply online.. Common App? App fee (or waiver) Request Transcript (PARCHMENT) Send SAT/ACT scores if you had the chance to take them. Check with your colleges! Write personal statement/ essay (optional?) RACC or other Dual Enrollment (must contact the college to send transcript after HS Graduation) Recommendations* (request recs from teachers now only if required by your school!)   8. Request a Transcript Hamburg uses Parchment, to electronically send transcripts to colleges. Do not email your counselor to send a transcript. **BUT, if you apply using Common App, Counselors will take care of transcripts, electronically** For more information, visit the Counseling Office Webpage Transcripts & Recommendations TAB Watch Tutorial Request a Transcript Click on REQUEST MY TRANSCRIPT link Click on NEW LEARNER ACCOUNT No need to create a full profile, just basic information and request $1.00 / transcript

  9. Lets Review Let s Review Online, at the college website(s) How do students apply to college? What is Common Application? 1 application for multiple schools Follow the directions from each school *completed application *application fee *official HS transcript Are recommendations required or optional? Is an essay required or optional? TEST SCORES (SAT/ACT) most all colleges are WAIVING PARCHMENT.com Do not email your counselor What do I need to apply to college? Where do I go to send my HS Transcript? I can t do a tour of the college, how can I find out more? College virtual meet @ HAHS? View the college website for virtual tours. Join a virtual college fair! Be resourceful! Still Confused? Check out HS Counselor Webpage or make an appointment to see your counselor

  10. Financial Aid FAFSA & PHEAA ALL Students & Parents of college-bound students must complete a FAFSA online form. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to get started. Have financial aid questions? Contact the FAFSA help line or the college financial aid office directly. Complete the FAFSA only after October 1st Select the correct application year PHEAA the last page of FAFSA will ask if students want to also apply for GRANT $$ through PHEAA-YES! More information found at www.pheaa.org 2021-2022 app

  11. Scholarships are found by putting in the time, and doing the research. Where do I find scolarships? Scholarships posted on Guidance Webpage Hamburg and local scholarships and applications Do not forget ESTHER LUDWIG SCHOLARSHIP DUE early January annually 85% and higher CUM GPA for 4 year college 80% and higher CUM GPA for trade or 2 year college Outside Scholarships Create an account with scholarships.com or other national sites. Check with your bank, vfw, local unions, etc. Apply in FALL to college-specific scholarships Some colleges require separate applications Some colleges automatically screen for scholarships based off of FAFSA information and/or merit (grades).
