  1. dark, competent hands

  2. Mandy got her degree, did she? Dog my cats

  3. Word choice of dark sounds racist as it makes it seem as if this defines her. Competent tells us that she is able She is a good driver Creates sympathy because you know that the inspector only sees the colour of her skin instead of her skill. Makes it sound unusual that someone would be both dark and competent highlights the common view of the time.

  4. Negative attitude towards Marian Sees himself as better Can t believe she is educated and so mocks her and tries to put her down by calling her by the wrong name. Uses a rhetorical question to make the suggestion sound ridiculous. Dog my cats shows that he is making a joke and feigning shock.

  5. if only I could pay you half of what you re worth

  6. Who's fretting to begin, Who's going out to win?

  7. Mrs Ericson cares about Marian and wants to do right by her but does not see her as equal. Holding her back Knows she should be doing better things with her life but feels no obligation to help her. Marian is underpaid paid less than half what she should be Mrs Ericson thinks positive things about Marian and sees that she is valuable Sees her as a possession like slavery

  8. Rhetorical question sounds like there is no doubt that any normal man would feel this way. fretting to begin eager to go to war, excited, think it is a good thing, almost a game Continue extended metaphor of war as a game Use of win is patriotic as Pope knows that Britain will win the war, makes it sound like a game, plays down the realities of the true cost of winning a war Makes it sound heroic

  9. Wholl earn the Empires thanks Will you, my laddie?-

  10. There is not a lot of point in discussing literature in an ugly voice

  11. Word choice Patriotic British Empire will honour and glorify men on their return from war. Guilt men as they would want to be viewed as a hero and celebrated. Contrast to reality with men disfigured and despised Chatty/colloquial Sounds friendly and as if she is trying to do the men a favour.

  12. Trishs opinion Snobby, makes it sounds as if you would have to be posh to be well educated. Symbolic of Rita s change How far is she prepared to go. She has completely redefined her life but does not want to lose her accent as this is an important aspect of her individuality. Starts to show the cracks in Frank and Rita s relationship as he is willing to believe that this is her opinion and is shocked.

  13. I wanna write essays like those on there

  14. This clever, pyrotechnical pile of self-conscious allusion is worthless, talentless shit -

  15. Characterisation and theme of ambition Shows that Rita views the work of others more highly than her own but is prepared to work to reach this standard She is determined and not prepared to give up. She views education as a means to find herself and feels that writing successful essays are the only way to do this. The essays are symbolic of her change and the life that she desires.

  16. Attitude to education Frank despises education and the illusions of grandeur that it gives people including himself. He views his poetry as worthless This highlights the differences between him and Rita as she reads into his work and tries to give it a relevance that is not present Shows how Rita has changed, more confident and fairly arrogant. Anger towards Rita as she is not the person that he knew. Lost her individuality and no just reacts the same as any other student.
