Comprehensive Overview of Georgia's School Improvement Systems
Richard Woods, Georgia's School Superintendent, leads the initiative to enhance Georgia's education system through the Systems of Continuous Improvement. The Instructional Awareness Walk (IAW) program offers support to schools in establishing effective instruction and a conducive learning environment. Schools can request an IAW review to track progress on the five key systems: Coherent Instruction, Effective Leadership, Professional Capacity, Family and Community Engagement, and Supportive Learning Environment. The focus areas include Planning for Quality Instruction, Delivering Quality Instruction, Monitoring Student Progress, Maintaining Order and Safety, and Ensuring a Student Learning Community.

Richard Woods, Georgia s School Superintendent Educating Georgia s Future IAW Overview gadoe.org gadoe.org The IAW review process provides detailed information for a school on its progress toward full implementation of Georgia s Systems of Continuous Improvement (GSCI), especially in the systems of Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment. An IAW is a review that a school or district can choose to implement to help with its improvement efforts. Any Georgia school can request an IAW review from GaDOE or RESA, or use the review tool to self-assess progress on GSCI.

SDE team or trained staff observes multiple classrooms. Observations are 10 - 15 minutes in length. Observations are confidential and results are not to be shared with individual teachers. SDE team or trained staff collates the data and develops target areas.

Richard Woods, Georgia s School Superintendent Educating Georgia s Future Summary of IAW Protocol gadoe.org gadoe.org An IAW team will conduct classroom observations using a tool focused on the Coherent Instruction and Supportive Learning Environment structures. After reviewing all the IAW observation data, the IAW team will score three structures in Coherent Instruction (CI-1, CI-2, & CI-3) and two structures in Supportive Learning Environment (SLE-1 & SLE-3) and rate the school s progress on each as either Exemplary, Operational, Emerging, or Not Evident. IAW team writes comments and target actions for the school.

Data Sources: classroom observations and available school data Led by: Area Program Assessment Specialists or trained personnel Frequency: On request from all schools as staff capacity allows Collaboration: APAS will provide PL for any organization wanting to use IAW tool in order to build capacity for organizations to self-monitor and to reduce variability of implementation.
