This project will take a while. Please dont rush through it. We are all currently facing a part of history that hasn t been experienced before in our lifetimes. These activities will give your student, and the whole household, a place to record some things that are going on around them during this pandemic. Time capsules are fun to make, and even more fun to open years down the line. This is a video about time capsules for kids (you DO Not need to bury your time capsule) Day 1: A shoe box, wooden box, large plastic storage container or even a mason jar will do. DIY something from the kitchen, consider using a cookie tin or egg carton for your time capsule. You might want to gather all of your time capsule items together first to determine the amount of storage you ll need. You can hide your box in a storage closet behind other items. An attic, basement or garage are also great locations. You want to hide your time capsule somewhere where others will not find it!You could also ask a friend or family member to hold on to the container, just don t tell your little one who has it! Decorate Your Time Capsule Next, decorate your container. We have included a few sizes of labels you can use for your time capsule, with a fill- in-the-blank section for your child s name and date of opening. Print, cut out and glue on the top or center of the container.
Day 2: You Are Living Through History Right Now On a sheet of paper draw a picture of the people you are in quarantine with. Make sure to label each person. Don t forget your pets! Day 3: All About Me Write the answers to complete each sentence. Write neatly. My Favorites: Write or draw I am ________ years old. I stand ________ inches tall. I weigh ________ pounds. Shoe Size: _________ Favorite place ___________________ Favorite toy __________________ Favorite song ___________________ Favorite color ________________ My best friends are _________________________ and Favorite animal _______________ ________________________. Favorite food _________________ When I grow up I want to be __________________________. Favorite TV show ______________ Favorite movie ________________ Make sure to date your papers. Favorite book _________________ Favorite activity________________
Day 4: How am I feeling? On a sheet of paper draw your face (large, see example) and draw how you feel about being in quarantine. Write some words to describe how you feel. Write what you are thankful for. Draw a smiley face for each statement: 1.I don t go to school for the rest of this school year. 2.I can t play with my friends. 3.I get to do school at home. 4.I can t see my teachers. 5.I am making a time capsule.
Day 5: What I am most excited about doing when the quarantine is over On a piece of paper draw 3 boxes and draw or write about the 3 things you will be most excited about doing when quarantine is lifted. 1 2 3 Day 6: My Community Get a sheet of paper and fold it in two the hamburger way. On the top draw where you are staying during this time and write your address underneath. On the bottom write about (or draw) a way that helps you feel connected to others (hearts in windows, rainbows, sidewalk chalk messages, calling others, writing letters, etc.) __ __ __ _
Day 7: You are not stuck at home; you are safe at home! Make the following sheet. Write What I do to keep busy on the cloud. Draw, or write, about 6 ways you are keeping doing during quarantine in each section. What am I doing to keep busy?
Day 8: Make handprints Today is fun! Make a handprint of everyone who lives in your house! You can do this several ways. If you have paints that is the easiest way. Pick a color for each person. Paint their hand (don t put on too much paint) and press their hand on paper. When the hands are dry cut them out, write the name and date on each hand. You can also color hands with water color markers. If you can t do that simply trace and cut everyone s hand.
Day 9: Special Occasions What occasions did you celebrate during this time? (e.g. St. Patrick s Day, Easter, birthdays, Cinco de Mayo). Make and fill in the chart as you go along. Date How you celebrated Event
Day 10: Things to go in your time capsule Remember that you won t get these things back until you open the time capsule. Find things that are not too big. They have to go in the capsule. 1) Find something that is your favorite color. 2) Find something that represents a thing you like to do (example: a Chuckie Cheese token, a picture of your favorite video game or device, a little pine cone if you like the outdoors, etc.) 3) Find a picture of your favorite actor, singer, and cartoon character. 4) Ask a parent to print out the national news headlines for the day (CNN or MSNBC are good sources). https://www.cnn.com/ https://www.msnbc.com/ 5) Ask a parent to print out the local news headlines for the day. https://www.wrdw.com/ https://www.wjbf.com/ https://www.augustachronicle.com/ 6) Write a short note to yourself about your quarantine experience. Make sure you tell about you feelings and a goal you have for the future. Also write advice for future you about handling self-isolation.
Now you can put your capsule aside but dont put it up/hide it just yet. On the last day of quarantine, finish the final page that needs to go in your capsule. You can print it out of just write down the information on another sheet of paper. You will need to ask an adult to help you with this part.
