  1. Welcome to the Interest Group on Education and Training for Research Data Handling! How do we make data sharing work in the era of open science? One fundamental aspect is education and training! Defining data handling competences and skills profile What and who: Gathering required and desirable knowledge/skills for handling of research data, in 4 specified professional areas: Research librarians (coordinator: Laura Molloy, University of Oxford) Research administrators (coordinator: Patrice Ajai-Ajagbe, Association of Commonwealth Universities) Research infrastructure managers / operators (coordinator: Yuri Demchenko, University of Amsterdam) Researchers (coordinator: Christopher Jung, KIT)

Defining data handling competences and skills profile Why: 1. research professions have seen much recent change because data because of RD and its handling; 2. making different professions work together much better to have scope beyond only one profession; 3. very important for having people employed: young professionals employment from education; to enhance CPD.   4. Research librarians: essential skills (so far!) Systems and standards: Metadata, familiarity with various metadata standards Familiarity with various data standards Data management planning Data repositories; knowledge of repositories and other digital initiatives Data preparation Data backup and security Experience of data and document management Understanding of RDM policy issues and best practice Familiarity with RDM lifecycle Review and appraisal of research data Ethical and legal requirements in handling data from human participants Interpersonal / human factor: Marketing services Building collaborations; interaction and cooperation with business and IT personnel Understand and create organisational culture change Training, advocacy and awareness-raising activities Managing and influencing business change activities Experience of working with an HE research establishment
