OVERVIEW: Professional Boards Professional Boards are established in terms of section 14 A of the Act. Objects of Professional Boards Objects of Professional Boards are spelled out in section 14B and include, amongst others: Consultation and liaison with other Boards and parties Promotion of social services on a national basis Control and exercising of authority in respect of training and practice of professions within its ambit South African Council for Social Service Professions
OVERVIEW: Professional Boards Determination of minimum standards for education and training of the professions within its ambit Maintenance and enhancement of the dignity and integrity of the professions falling within its ambit. Guide the professions falling within its ambit to protect the public. Communicate to the Minister matter of public importance South African Council for Social Service Professions
Board function Professional Boards are mandated by the ACT to: Direct the Registrar to remove any names from a register or, restore thereto or suspend a registered person from practicing his or her profession pending a professional inquiry in terms of section 21. Subject to prescribed conditions, approve training schools. Determine minimum standards for education and training of the professions within its ambit, including continuous professional education of persons practicing the profession. Board function continued Promote liaison and cooperation with training institutions in the field of training as contemplated and regulated, and promotion of standards for such training. Appoint moderators and examiners, conduct examinations and grant certificates, and charge the prescribed fees in respect of such examinations. Norms and Standards Standards are bedrocks of quality assurance to Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL/HEI) and Further Education and Training Colleges (FETC). In 2013, the work of developing standards started in earnest as the Task Team comprising of Board members and academics was established to participate and engage other stakeholders to produce the norms and standards for quality education of registrants. Norms and Standards The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) standards are for admission to study BSW at any Higher Education Institution (HEI) in South Africa. They have been developed to standardize and ensure that high quality education is offered in all the BSW programmes which will produce a graduate who is capable of functioning as a qualified social worker, steeped in the professional ethos, values and ethics of social work. The document is organised around the following key areas: Admissions, Programme Management and Resources, Curriculum Content and teaching, Practice and Assessment. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NEXT STEPS CONTINUED Appointment and inauguration of a Board. Induction of new Board. Gazetting process (new Board, notices etc). Development of or finalisation of regulations, ethics and application forms for auxiliary and for professional levels. Registration of fit and proper practitioners .
