Activity 1: instructions When thinking about University, there is a variety of terminology which is important to understand. 1. Use the worksheet to draw a line to match the University terminology with the definition. 2. Discuss why you think this is the correct answer and discuss any experiences you have using or hearing this terminology. 3. When you have finished, compare your answers with another pair and discuss any discrepancies.
Activity 1: answers Freshers: an informal term used for students in their first year at university. Clearing: when students don't get the A Levels or grades required by their chosen universities, this is the system operated to give places on courses that still have space. . Deferred entry: securing a place at university but starting in a year; often to take a gap year. Dissertation: a large piece of written work on a specific subject, usually completed in the final year of study. Sandwich course: a type of degree which includes a year working in the field of study. Prospectus: a book which each university has, listing all the courses and information about the university. It is available for free. Master s Degree (MA): a type of degree completed after a first degree. This degree looks at a specific part of a subject in more detail. Bursary: money given to a student, which they do not need to pay back. This is usually dependent on the student s household income. Bachelor of Science (BSc): a type of degree, usually in mathematics, engineering, or natural science. Bachelor of Arts (BA): a type of degree usually in humanities and social science fields. Joint honours degree: a university course that is split between 2 subjects. Halls of residence: university accommodation blocks. These can be catered or self catered. Undergraduate degree: the first degree students complete.
Activity 2: instructions Make a spider diagram of any one word from the terminology list. Write down everything you know about the word, and do some independent research to find out everything you can! Remember to: - Colour code the different elements of the diagram - Write down where you found the information for anything you did some extra research for - Discuss in groups to create the most comprehensive diagram
