Ice hockey face-offs must occur at specific locations marked on the ice, with rules governing where they take place based on various situations like rule infractions or stoppages. This guide covers the basic guidelines for determining face-off locations, including scenarios like intentional offside/icing, goals, stoppages, and off-sides. It also explains how face-offs are handled when the puck is located in different zones and what happens in cases of icing errors. Understanding these rules is essential for players, officials, and spectators to grasp the intricacies of face-offs in ice hockey.

  1. Determining Face-Off Locations

  2. Face-off Locations All face-offs will occur at one of the locations marked on the ice. This rule is known as Nine Dot No face off will occur at any other location on the ice in any circumstance

  3. Basic Guidelines Playing rules or where the puck was last legally played will determine where the face-off will take place For example, an Intentional Offside/Icing will take place at the offending teams defensive face off location Following a goal and start of periods will always take place at center ice If a team commits an infraction of the rules in the attacking zone, the face off will take place at one of the neutral zone face off locations nearest to the attack zone of that team

  4. GUIDELINES PUCK LOCATED IN END-ZONE If Defending Team causes stoppage, the face-off is located at the nearest defending zone face-off spot. If Attacking Team causes stoppage, the face-off is located at the nearest Neutral Zone face-off spot. PUCK LOCATED IN NEUTRAL ZONE After stoppage occurs, the face-off retreats back to the nearest face-off spot (including center ice) closer to the defending zone of the team causing the stoppage. The team causing the stoppage should never gain any territorial advantage. If both teams cause the stoppage of play, then the nearest face-off spot will be used.

  5. Icing Face-off will be located in the defending zone of the offending team. The side will be determined by where the shot originated from

  6. ICING ERROR If the officials shall call Icing by mistake, the face off will take place in the attacking zone of the offending team Side of the ice will be determined of where the puck was located when play was stopped

  7. OFF-SIDES x If a player carries the puck over the line, the face off will take place at the nearest neutral zone location If the puck is passed across the line causing an off-sides, the face off will take place at the location of the original pass (either direct or deflected off a player) Intentional off-sides face-off will be located in the defending zone of the offending team x x x x

  8. STOPPAGE BY DEFENDING TEAM If the defending team shall cause a stoppage in their defending zone, the face off will occur at either side in their zone Location will be determined by where the puck was located at the time of stoppage Exception is when the goaltender freezes the puck. Face-off will take place on the side of where the shot originated

  9. STOPPAGE BY ATTACKING TEAM When a stoppage is caused by an attacking team in the attacking zone, the face-off will occur outside of their attacking zone at a neutral zone location Location will be determined by where the puck was located at the time of stoppage

  10. PUCK SHOT OUT OF PLAY (Off Post/Crossbar) If the attacking team shoots the puck towards the net and it hits the post or crossbar and goes directly out of play, the face-off will occur in the attacking zone of the offending team

  11. Players proceed below tops of circles If any attacking player that is outside the top of the end-zone circles when play is stopped and they proceed below, the face-off will occur outside the attacking zone at a neutral zone location x x x

  12. Explanation of Territorial Advantage Flow of play Whenever a team causes a stoppage, the face-off will occur at one of the nine face-off locations for which gives them the least territorial advantage x
