  2. CONTENTS Background Methods Findings Discussion Conclusion 27/9/2024 2

  3. BACKGROUND Growing burden of cancer in Malaysia Cancer in Malaysia present late (Leong et al 2009, Razak et al 2009, Hisham 2004) Lack of awareness and negative beliefs about cancer implicated Poor screening uptakes Increasing awareness on cancer warning signs may promote early presentation, result in early treatment and increase screening uptake Awareness of cancer risk factors are key towards positive behavioural change in cancer prevention 27/9/2024 3

  4. BACKGROUND (2) Awareness vary across socio-demographics Non-recognition of symptom seriousness associated with patient-related delay in diagnosis (Macdonald et al 2006) Currently in Malaysia, there are no general cancer awareness measures developed, validated or used on a population-representative sample. The study is to provide a national baseline level of cancer awareness in Malaysian population 27/9/2024 4

  5. METHODS Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer adapted to Malaysia (ABC-M) Forward and backward translation to Malay, Mandarin and Tamil; and cognitive interviewing Quantitative assessment of content relevance and quality of translation Random digit dialing; Computer assisted telephone interview on mobile phone numbers 1895 participants aged 40 and above took part 27/9/2024 5

  6. METHODS (2) There are many warning signs and symptoms of cancer. Please name as many as you can think of.. I am now going to read out a list of things which may or may not increase your chances of getting cancer in general. For each one can you tell me how much you agree or disagree that it may increase your chances of getting cancer? Awareness of signs/symptoms 1 open ended question 11-item symptom recognition questions Awareness of cancer risk factors 12-item risk factor prompted questions Data were weighted according to age, sex and ethnicity based on 2010 Malaysian population census Analysis with Stata 10 27/9/2024 6

  16. DISCUSSION Awareness of symptoms and risk factors of cancer in Malaysia could be improved. Several items are more recognised as cancer symptoms and risk factors while some are less recognised Recall of cancer symptoms are bizarrely low probably due to mobile telephone interviewing method Ethnic minority, older aged and lower education groups seem to have lower awareness similar to other studies 27/9/2024 16

  17. CONCLUSION Several cancer warning signs and cancer risk factors were not well recognised by the Malaysian population. Strengthening of health literacy may be needed in order to improve early presentation and promote risk reduction activities, beginning with increasing cancer awareness 27/9/2024 17
