GETTING REAL ABOUT GOD S RESET Acts 19:8-20
Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9 But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. [Acts 19:8-10, NIV]
11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. 13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out. [Acts 19:11-14, NIV]
14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you? 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. 17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus [Acts 19:14-17, NIV]
they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. [Acts 19:18-20, NIV]
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: DEVOTED TO STUDYING GOD S WORD Paul took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall... This went on for two years (v10-11)
Am I really devoted to Gods Word? Read my Bible most every day More time on God s Word than social media Reading or watching solid Bible teachers Take notes on Sunday sermons & review them Take a Bible class to learn with others
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: EXPECTING EXTRAORDINARY MIRACLES God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. (v12)
Am I really expecting extraordinary miracles? Spend time in prayer most every day More time talking God than others abt problems Use Scripture to pray and claim God s promises Daily time in worship to focus on God as great Pray in public for needs or to give thanks
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: SERIOUS ABOUT SPIRITUAL WARFARE One day the evil spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you? (v15)
Am I really serious about spiritual warfare? Do not ignore areas of sin or compromise Reject bitterness, offense, and unforgiveness Use Scripture to reject lies and defeat Satan Have a prayer partner to pray with Choose periodic fasting as part of my life
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: PUBLIC IN RENOUNCING WORLDY WAYS Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. (v18)
Am I public in renouncing worldly ways? Have renounced sinful habits in my life Others know & see I have rejected sinful ways Have gotten rid of what doesn t please God Have repented of sins to others when needed My words and attitude reflect a different spirit
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: INTENTIONAL TO SHARE GOD S WAY In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. (v20)
Am I being intentional to share Gods ways? People know I am a Christian Tell people I will pray for their needs Ask God to show me what to share with people Use Scripture to encourage people Invite people to know Jesus/come to church
WE PREPARE FOR A REAL RESET BY BEING: Devoted to Biblical teaching Open to extraordinary miracles Serious about spiritual warfare Public in renouncing worldly ways Intentional to share God s ways
PREPARING AS A CHURCH | EPH. 4:11: Devoted to studying God s Word (teaching) Open to extraordinary miracles (apostolic) Serious about spiritual warfare (pastoral) Public in renouncing worldly ways (prophetic) Intentional to share God s ways (evangelism)
GETTING REAL AS A CHURCH It was Jesus who [through the Holy Spirit] gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. [Ephesians 4:11]
