The proposal discusses the creation of a National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for Somalia using data from the Somali Health and Demographic Survey (SHDS). The SHDS, with a sample size of 16,360 households, aims to provide insights into the health and demographic characteristics of the Somali population, essential for guiding policy development and program formulation. Around one-third of global SDG indicators can be generated through household surveys like the SHDS, making it a valuable resource for calculating the NMPI. This proposal outlines the objectives of the survey, the dimensions and indicators considered, deprivation cut-offs, weight assignments, and results of the MPI decomposition. The framework incorporates different cut-offs and includes data analysis for urban, rural, and nomadic regions, highlighting the survey's comprehensive approach towards capturing poverty dynamics in Somalia.

  1. Proposing a National MPI for Somalia Proposing a National MPI for Somalia Discussions on the Frameworks and results Discussions on the Frameworks and results Somalia National Bureau of Statistics 27th - 31st August 2022, Nairobi, Kenya

  2. Overview of SHDS 2020 Survey Objectives SDGs Indicators generated from SHDS Data Sources for NMPI Universe of Indicators [% of indicators (yes, alt, no), possible dimensions considered] in Excel Proposed Dimensions and Indicators Deprivation cut-offs Outline Set the weights for Dimensions & the indicators within each dimension Framework Summary Poverty Cut-offs Results: Scenario 8.2 Contribution of Dimensions to the MPI Contribution of Indicators to the MPI MPI Decomposition by region Proposed Frameworks - Different cut-offs Indicators n/a for Nomadic

  3. The Somali Health and Demographic Survey was a national survey with a total sample size of 16,360 households. The sample for the SHDS was designed to provide estimates of key indicators for:- the country as a whole, for 16 out of the eighteen pre-war geographical regions, which are the country s first-level administrative divisions as well as separately for urban, rural and nomadic areas. Overview of SHDS

  4. The main objective of the Somali Health and Demographic Survey (SHDS) was to:- provide evidence on the health and demographic characteristics of the Somali population that will guide the development of programmes and formulation of effective policies. help monitor and evaluate national, sub- national and sector development plans, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both by the government and development partners. Survey Survey Objectives Objectives

  5. 232 Global SDG indicators around one-third (80) can be generated by household surveys/census

  6. SHDS Data will be used for the calculation of the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI) specifically, the following Datasets will be used:- Household Data - Household Recode (HR):- It includes the characteristics of the households where the individual lives, etc. Household Member Recode (PR) This dataset has one record for every household member. It includes variables like sex, age, education, orphanhood, height and weight measurement, etc NOTE:- The unit of analysis of the Somalia NMPI is household Data Sources for NMPI

  10. Deprivation cut Deprivation cut- -offs (3/3) offs (3/3)

  11. In this step, you will be prompted to specify the weights by indicator and by dimension. The total percentage of all dimensions must equal 100. The overall percentage of indicators within each dimension must equal 100. By default, the various dimensions and the various indicators within each dimension are given equal weights. Set the weights for Dimensions & the indicators within each dimension
