HISTORY & MISSION
 
The Detroit Police Department established the Rape Counseling Center in
November 1975. It was one of the first rape counseling centers operated
by a police department in the country.
 
As our services expanded, a name change was inevitable. Currently
named Detroit Police Victim Assistance Program, our mission is to
enhance the well-being of individuals victimized, within the city of Detroit,
by sexual assault, domestic violence, and homicide.

OUR COMMITMENT
 
Victims often suffer in silence. The Victim Assistance staff is committed to restoring
hope and promoting healing.
 
Victim Assistance facilitates victims in navigating the criminal justice process.
 
Victim Assistance is a program that offers education and outreach services to the
community.
 
Victim Assistance offers support for Personal Protection Order Advocacy, in addition
to their other services.

Provides supportive services to the
aforementioned crime victims.

Follows up with all domestic violence ,
sexual assault and secondary
homicide victims within their
perspective units through the daily
police reports that are forwarded to
our program .
We provide those crime victims with
resources , safety planning ,
anniversary calls , shelter resources,
personal protection order referrals,
short and long term counseling ,
support groups, etc….

Total Number of individuals who received services is : 11,804
Domestic Violence – 8,008
Sexual Assault – 482
Secondary Victims of Homicide – 2,034
Other Assaultive Crimes : 1,280
 DPD Victim Assistance follows up with victims in the precinct that may have experienced :
 Crimes that have a component of domestic violence, sexual assault,
 ID Theft, Fraud, Hate Crimes, and Custodial or Non Custodial Kidnapping

DPD VICTIM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM VEHICLES
 
 
To date we have three (3) Victim of Crimes Act Grant purchased vehicles that consist of :
2017 Blue Ford Explorer - 175005
2017 Silver Ford Explorer- 175006
2017 White Ford Explorer-175004
The vehicles primary purpose is to transport crime victims from their homes to their
appointments for the supportive services we provide .
Victim Assistance also designates days for the SVU to utilize our driver and  vehicles to pick
up crime victims to make witness statements in the Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes
units.
Most of VAP's employees possess a City of Detroit permit to operate municipal vehicles..
