  1. Date A happy ending?

  2. A Heros Welcome? We are almost at the end of our tale so we can assume that Odysseus real identity is about to be revealed What predictions can you make as to how the other characters are going to react to this news? Consider the fact that Eurycleia has looked all of the doors from the outside along with removing all of the weapons from the walls

  3. Although it seems like a long time ago, when we first began reading/listening to this tale, we were introduced to the concept of guest friendship What can you remember about this Ancient Greek tradition? From what we have seen so far, do all of the characters abide by the rules of this tradition? When Odysseus reveals himself, will he himself follow the rules?

  4. We will shortly be listening/reading the final instalment of The Odyssey The first instalment of Episode 12 has the ominous title A Grim Harvest How does this title make you feel? What associations/connotations do the words in this title have & how might these manifest themselves in this Episode?

  5. Listen to/read through Section 1 of Episode 12 of The Odyssey: How do you feel about Odysseus behaviour in this final Episode? Have we had any clues at any other point of the tale as to how things might end?

  6. Whether we were aware of it or not, the text has been full of foreshadowing as to how the tale might pan out Obviously, we were aware of Penelope s dream & how it foreshadowed the bloodbath that occurred in the feasting hall However, there have been a few other hints & clues as to this scene Can you think of anything that has happened or been said that has provided us with any hints as to the final Episode?

  7. Examine the following extract from Episode 12: And the other suitors nodded and they spat on the ground. And then a voice came echoing from the shadows by the door. I was an archer once, in the days of my youth. And Antinous turned and he looked at the old beggar and he lifted his lip in a sneering smile and he said, You might have been an archer once but now you are nobody! Is there anything in this section that seems familiar?

  8. Odysseus was told he must learn humility has he? It seems as though the suitors haven t This line is eerily similar to a statement Odysseus made to Polyphemus; however, at this moment, he is indeed nobody And the other suitors nodded and they spat on the ground. And then a voice came echoing from the shadows by the door. I was an archer once, in the days of my youth. And Antinous turned and he looked at the old beggar and he lifted his lip in a sneering smile and he said, You might have been an archer once but now you are nobody!

  9. Examine the following extract: The suitors ran to the walls to grab weapons, but all the weapons were gone. And Odysseus and Telemachus were loosing arrow after arrow after arrow after arrow. The suitors ran to the doors. They rattled at the doors but the doors were locked from the outside. And Odysseus and Telemachus were loosing arrow after arrow after arrow and when all the arrows were spent, with a sword in one hand and a spear in the other, they made their way across the hall, cutting and slicing the living flesh, reaping a grim harvest of death. Other than Penelope s dream, how was this event foreshadowed earlier in the text?

  10. Throughout this text, Odysseus has been warned that there will be danger where there should be a welcome Clearly, on his arrival to his own home, he would be expecting a joyous reunion; however, it is clear he has been gone too long for this to be the case For once, though, it seems as though Odysseus has taken heed of the warnings on hearing that Telemachus was in danger, he removed the weapons & had the foresight to lock the doors from the outside

  11. And Finally Think about everything that Odysseus has been through & has supposedly learnt throughout this tale Do his actions suggest he has changed or has he just reverted back to the character he was at the beginning of this story? Considering the death & destruction currently lying in the Feasting Hall, what will he do next?
