CONNECTIONS TO CANTERBURY Through our analysis of Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, it is clear that Chaucer had many observations about the societal norms in which he lived. He communicated information about gender, religion, careers/titles, wealth, marriage/love through a clever satirical lens.
Inspired by his work, you will be required to generate a research question that creates a modernized connection with his work. You will investigate current sources, and create an informative essay that departs from Chaucer s time and shines an unbiasedlight on a subject that holds relevancy in our modern world.
DISSECTING THE PROMPT Writing Prompt: -Using a minimum of 6 sources (3 from the approved databases-3 more from reliable sources of your choosing), explain the modern realities/treatment/facts/practices that surround a modern pilgrim/stereotype of your choosing. -Your essay should go beyond simple facts about the pilgrim you choose (ex: a simple summary of a career will not suffice). -You must create a specific self-generated research question that will allow your essay to address your topic in a more specific manner. -It is your job to relay strongly supported information about your research topic (not to argue a personal agenda).

IN YOUR PROMPT PACKET Step 1: Brainstorm-Create a list of topics/pilgrims/stereotypes that Chaucer explored in his writing of The Canterbury Tales: Help (since we did not get to read all of the prologue): Men, women, priests/nuns, other religious leaders, farmers, students, police men, rich, poor, cooks, married individuals, single individuals, hunters, the old, the young, criminals, doctors, business owners, policemen, knights (similar to military men), lawyers, rich party hosts (no job- just party all day), cloth makers (our factory workers), construction men/carpenters, bounty hunters, educated individuals, uneducated individuals, kings/queens
STEP 2: CREATE A MORE SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION THAT YOU CAN USE TO GROUND YOUR INVESTIGATION (remember, you are not trying to ARGUE anything, you are simply exploring and presenting information) Sample Research Question: How are women treated in the modern workplace? Pilgrim/Stereotype= Women This RQ relates to The Canterbury Tales because Chaucer portrayed gender roles/career opportunities for men and women in his prologue/tales. Sample Research Question: What are indicators of wealth in 2017? Pilgrim/Stereotype= Upper-class This RQ relates to The Canterbury Tales because Chaucer discussed signs of wealth in his culture throughout his prologue/tales.

The agency produces a lot of research and development in the newest technology; however, one could question the true motive of all these projects. Based on recent projects, the main purpose for research and developments by groups under the government, such as DARPA, is to create advancements in weaponry and to benefit society with innovative technology.

CRAFTING YOUR BODY PARAGRAPHS: LETS LOOK AT A SAMPLE! (SEE SET 1, SEE SET 2) Governmental projects are meant to create new weaponry. The government is developing a technology that connects the human mind to computers. An article on the Daily Beast describes such development by claiming, the Pentagon is attempting what was, until recently, an impossible technological feat developing a high-bandwidth neural interface that would allow people to beam data from their minds to external devices and back. That s right a brain modem. One that could allow a soldier to, for example, control a drone with his mind ( Pentagon Research Could Make Brain Modem a Reality ). A device as such would primarily be used to assist soldiers in connecting to robots and computer systems to assist them in the battlefield. In addition, the government is being pressured to invent combat technology. An article by Christian Davenport describes the new competition between countries by announcing, the Pentagon finds itself in a new arms race, struggling to keep pace with forms of combat that are fought with bytes as well as bullets [h]arnessing the latest technology to upgrade the Defense Department s arsenal is top priority for Carter, who recently said, The race now depends on who can out-innovate faster than anyone else . In order to compete with other nations and protect itself, the government has to develop new weapon advancements to keep up with others. One of the government s purposes for research and development is to create more advanced weaponry to defend itself.

Ultimately, people have the right to be informed on what the government intends to do with these world changing creations; whether it is to help improve their lives, or to take others.
