LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this session you will; Be able to recognize the key elements of your dream job Appreciate the pros & cons of different working options as a GP Be confident in writing a tailored letter of application and CV Know the key elements that make up a good interview candidate

  4. THE EXIT COURSE Today s Session Split into two groups and then switch over at coffee break. Come together at the end to share what has been useful from the session Group One Which factors should you consider to be important in your dream job? How do you rank their importance? Exploring pros and cons of different working options Applying for jobs where do you look? Group Two CVs Job planning Negotiation Wider portfolio options.

  5. JOB TYPES What are the Pros and Cons of each of these working options; Salaried GP Salaried GP GP Partner Options Locum GP GP Partner GP locum/freelance Portfolio GP Portfolio GP

  6. THE JOB ADVERT Where to look? Word of mouth, Bradford VTS, Email Adverts through the scheme/CCG, BMJ, GP/Pulse Magazine, Twitter, Watsapp, Careers fair/exhibition, conferences What to look out for? What are they really looking for? Does this (wholly or partly) meet your aspirations? VBR (Values Based Recruitment) To apply or not apply? Weighing up and negotiating

  7. PRE-APPLICATION TASKS Things to consider BEFORE you apply Speak to the practice! Do some background research Sit in reception Browse the practice website Arrange an informal practice visit Consider a locum session? Speak to current and ex-staff Medical and admin Consider speaking to the outgoing GP

  8. THE LETTER OF APPLICATION Always write one unless specifically asked not to Keep it brief and to the point Mention the job you are applying for and where you saw the job listing. Mention what the employer is seeking, and how you could meet their needs? Mention your motivation and commitment to the role Don t forget to thank them at the end Have a look through some of the examples provided ***** NEVER LIE *****

CURRICULUM VITAE Should tell the story of you and your career Should make it clear why you are the best person for the role you are applying for Create a standard format that you can adapt for each position that you apply for Think about the layout (making it stand out from the rest) Tailor your CV for each role you apply for Highlight elements that match the person specification.

CURRICULUM VITAE Essential components Mandatory information (personal details, GMC number, Memberships etc) current employment career or employment history education and qualifications awards courses, meetings and conferences publications and research Quality Improvement Work Audits Interests References Sell yourself as much as possible and don't be afraid to exclude anything that is irrelevant to your application BUT NEVER LIE!!

  11. THE INTERVIEW Golden Rules Prepare, prepare prepare! Rehearse, smile, try to relax Think about what you would like to ask them as well as what they will want to ask you Dress the part Arrive early Know yourself Think about your values Know the organization you have applied to work in Thank the interview panel ***** NEVER LIE *****

  12. NEGOTIATION SKILLS Always start with yes Consider what you are willing to compromise and what you are not If you don t ask you wont always get Try and be flexible Consider the problems holistically Offer alternative suggestions Always aim for win-win outcomes where possible

  13. BEFORE YOUR FIRST DAY Visit the practice and have a look around Meet the team/staff before your first day Check your commute times and traffic information Have a look at your room if possible Clarify any queries
