Look at the top of page 13 of your textbook..lets analyze items a, b, c and d Abdullah worked for a big camera company for years. My friend in Boston. He s tired. Teaches mathematics to students at a good college in Massachusetts. a) b) c) d) which ones are sentences? Which are NOT sentences? How do you know?? 1. 2.
Every sentence in English has a subject and a verb. e.g. He works. They play. subject verb subject verb A sentence may have only a subject and a verb, but usually, there are other words in the sentence. e.g. - He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop. - They play basketball at the club every Saturday.
The Subject The subject is the person or thing the sentence is 'about'. Often (but not always) it will be the first part of the sentence. The subject will usually be a noun or a noun phrase (a noun and the words, such as adjectives, that modify it) followed by a verb. - He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop. - They play basketball at the club every Saturday.
In commands, we do not say or write the subject but the subject of the sentence will be always understood as YOU e.g. Answer the want ads. = YOU answer the want ads. Subjects come before the verb and often come at the beginning of the sentence: e.g. Saeed told me it was a great job. subject verb
Subjects can be one word or many words.. e.g. Saeed and Jack told me it was a great job. subject verb They told me it was a great job. subject verb
Subjects cannot be repeated We cannot say for example: Saeed he told me it was a great job. In this case, we will have a subject and a pronoun referring to the same subject for one verb. This is not correct. This is different from saying for instance: Saeed and Ahmed told me it was a great job. In this case, we have two different people/doers performing the same verb. This is OK
Punctuation Rules: The first letter of any sentence has to be CAPITALIZED. The sentence has to end with a full stop/period {.}; a question mark {?}; or an exclamation mark {!} in order to mark that the sentence has finished. Now it is time to go to page 14 to do exercise 2 with your teacher and friends.. ..good luck..

Descriptive Adjectives Descriptive Adjectives may come before the noun they describe..In this case , we use the articles a, an or the She is a smart girl. He is an important writer. The new teacher is in class. A , an or the are not used When we do not use nouns after the adjective..e.g. Ali is smart.
