  13. Delivery of Two Courses at the College Provide opportunities that our students would otherwise not have as EHS is a very small school and does not have a mechanical shop or welding facilities. Courses have a high practical component, which has been very popular with our students and has in part led to the very high success rate of our students in both of these courses.

  14. Successes knowledge and experience confidence that many of them gain, knowing that they are capable of having success at the college level.

  21. Josh Ryno

  22. Student Testimonial Hi! My name is Josh Rhyno and I am a grade 11 student at Kapuskasing District High School. I am currently enrolled in the Welding Dual Credit program with Northern College at KDHS

  23. Student Testimonial pg 2 The Welding program is helping me clarify my future career goals by introducing me to new skills and opportunities in the trades industry. I ve always had an interest in welding, and this program may allow me to pursue it in the future.

  24. Student Testimonial pg 3 The program has also helped me to obtain high school credits during the regular school day, but while giving me a small taste of the college experience. The field trips we have taken have further enhanced the value of this program. I would highly recommend that other students take advantage of this unique opportunity.

  25. Cochrane High School

  26. COCHRANE HIGH SCHOOL Three courses Delivered during the school day period 4 Twice a week Supervision provided by one teacher who supervises all three courses delivered in Period 4 School with Student Success and Administration choose students for the courses

  27. Teacher Supervision Dedicated teacher to help and monitor student success in all courses Teacher usually has only one course delivered per day however with 3 courses and 5 days there is overlap on one of the days Attendance is mandatory and we have removed students for non compliance Tracking also occurs monthly by SCWI Coordinator

  28. Program Design 3 dual credits in the same period but on different days, students can take up to 2 dual credit courses during one period. Usually they will be in one class on Mondays and Wednesdays and in the other class Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  29. Staffing Recommendations from school when possible Cochrane is over an hour from Timmins and attendance at the college is not possible Enhanced graduation results as a result of this program Student success rate in usually 80% or better

  30. CAD 1 Cochrane High School

  31. Computer Assisted Design CAD1 IN1224 TAF4T 45 hrs Teacher is retired teacher from the school Youngest 16 with 15 credits Oldest 19 with 26 credits Most with problems in school and behind in credit counts by at least 2 or 3 courses

  32. Introduction to Small Business BU4063 BBP4T Delivered in period 4 Teacher : young teacher from supply list Try to include Summer COOP placement to further enhance the experience Students : interested in Business or looking to enhance credit count

  33. Managing for Success GN1083 JBD4T 45 hrs Delivered in period 4 Teacher : young teacher from supply list Youngest 15 with 11 credits (usually ask for 16/16) Oldest is 18 with 24 credits

  34. Has the program helped your students catch up on their credit counts? The dual credit courses offered at ESCHS over the last several years have enabled our at risk students to catch up on credits and graduate with their peers.

  35. Program Benefits For some students taking CAD 1, it has introduced them and encouraged them to pursue their education in the Trades/Technological fields. Marketing and Business has also influenced College program choices.

  36. Additional Benefit to DC The other benefit, is that the students taking dual credit courses is that these courses transfer to their college programs or count towards elective courses enabling the students to have a reduced timetable. This transfer of credit also happens across various colleges in Ontario.

  37. Has participation in the courses made a difference in your graduation rates? The dual credit courses have definitely made a positive impact on our grad rates. Without dual credit courses students would have to come back for an extra semester or take summer COOP as their only option to graduate and pursue post- secondary programs. Many students who traditionally would not have graduated are not only graduating but are also going to college.

  38. In your opinion, what has been the most successful outcome of Dual credits for your students ? By far, the most successful outcome for our students is the ability to graduate in a timely manner with same age peers! When a student can graduate with their peers and get back on track after a rough or difficult start (due to unlimited number of circumstances) their hope, their self-esteem and their pride is restored. Seeing these students on stage receiving their diplomas makes all of us grateful that DSB ONE supports this initiative.

  39. Final Comment At ESCHS we are EXTREMELY grateful for having this initiative a possibility, even within our small Northern School. The flexibility that was given to us in order to be able to offer the dual credit courses was sincerely appreciated. Students are treated like college level students but also given the support they need to succeed. I am very thankful that I got to be part of this initiative from the beginning and know that it has made a difference in our students lives and in their future! Our dual credit teachers have also said that working for Northern College has been a very positive experience.
