Students can earn credits by participating in online surveys, in-person studies, and virtual interaction studies. CSUSM Psychology Human Participant Pool (HPP) OVERVIEW SLIDES
What is it? HPP refers to a scheduling website where researchers post research studies for students/individuals to participate in. As part of the CSUSM Psychology curriculum, our goal is to help students develop a rich understanding of research in psychology. HPP is intended to 1. be a learning experience for students to understand psychological research from the participant perspective. 2. aid in developing and advancing CSUSM faculty research.
What is it? If you are enrolled in PSYC 100, 220, 230 or 231, you are required to earn 8 HPP credits for each course you are enrolled in. To start earning credits, you must create an HPP account: http://hpp.csusm.edu When creating an account, you will be asked to provide some basic information. You will also be able to select which course to apply credits to. Be sure to select the correct course and section number! (You can modify this within your account as needed). Be sure to enter your correct email address!
Key Deadlines Your instructor will provide you the Student Handbook, which contains key deadlines for the current semester. 1. You must register on the HPP scheduling site by a certain date. 2. You must be 18 years old to participate in studies. If not, you must provide proof of age to the hppadmin. 3. There is an alternative assignment deadline if you prefer to not participate in research studies. 4. There is a last day to participate in HPP studies.
Ways to earn your credits 1. Online surveys: these studies on HPP will take you straight to a survey that you can complete on your web-browser. Only a maximum of 50% of credits can be earned via online surveys. 2. In person studies: you sign up for these studies on the HPP website and meet experimenters in person on campus to complete the study. 3. Virtual interaction studies: you sign up for these studies on the HPP website and meet experimenters synchronously on Zoom or another app to complete the study. Virtual interaction studies are considered the same as in person studies. **Note that for research participation, you should expect to earn one credit for about 30 minutes of participation.
Signing up for Studies Once your HPP account is set up, you will be able to complete a pre-screen questionnaire worth 1 HPP credit. You can also see and sign up for available research studies and track your credits. Note: You may not see any available studies right away so please check back regularly. Studies are posted by researchers and will vary throughout the semester in availability. DO NOT wait until the end of the semester to try to get all of your credits.
Ways to earn your credits For those who do not wish to participate in research studies, an alternative assignment option is available. 4. Alternative Assignments: You may write a 1-2 page summary and critique (i.e., what you thought about the experiment and findings) of a research article. *Each alternative assignment is worth 2 credits. You can reach your required 8 credits through any combination (e.g., four alternative assignment papers; two alt. assignment papers + 4 credits from participating in studies)
Alternative Assignments Instructions for Alternative assignments are on the HPP student handout. There will also be a specific document you can download, be sure to follow the instructions. Generally, for each alternative assignment paper you will: 1. Find an empirical research article within the past 5 years 2. Write a 1-2 page summary and critique 3. Each submissions should include the written summary/critique and a pdf of the article.
Submitting Alternative Assignments Beginning ~Week 3/4 of the semester, you will be enrolled in a Canvas course titled HPP Alternative Assignments . Every student will be enrolled, but you only need to worry about the course if you prefer to use alt. assignments to reach your credits. Otherwise, you may ignore the course. The course will only contain one assignment and an instructions document. You may submit multiple files to the same submission box for more credits. o You can also email them to hppadmin@csusm.edu **You may submit alternative assignments any time before the deadline.
Missing Studies/Penalties You are allowed two unexcused no-shows throughout the semester. If you reach three, you will not be allowed to sign up for any more studies and must complete alternative assignments to reach your required credits. If you must miss a study, you should reach out to the researchers in charge of the study (you can find this under study information on HPP). They can excuse you. If you do not reach your required 8 credits per course by the deadline, your final grade will be lowered by a half-step. For example, a student with a B grade will have their grade reduced to a B-; a student earning an A- will drop to a B+. The requirement is pass/no pass, meaning you either pass the requirement or not. For example, if you have 7 credits, you will still receive a drop in grade.
Additional points and Reminders A few additional points: - The HPP coordinator does not control which studies are posted and when, the coordinator works with faculty to make sure there are enough studies for students. - If you have questions about individual studies, you should reach out to the researchers in charge. That information is available under the study information on the HPP scheduling website. They are responsible for crediting you. Research studies take a while to get going. Check back regularly and throughout the semester. Do not wait until the end of the semester to participate. There will not be enough studies for you to reach your requirements if you wait.
Why HPP is important Knowledge in the field of psychology is developed through empirical research. As a participant, you will be taking part in a long-standing tradition of developing and furthering the psychological sciences. It s mutually beneficial as a learning experience for you, and for the professors and researchers in your classrooms. Please take your participation in research seriously. Many faculty depend on high quality data from your participation.
