Update on Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices Activities
Activities related to anchored fish aggregating devices (AFADs) including advisory support, training workshops, development of tablet applications, and progress on safety at sea and small craft legislation. Initiatives include weather/acoustic buoys and exploring new fishing methods for underutilized small pelagic fish species. Members are invited to note progress, provide support needs, and advise on new initiatives.

ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED UNDER COVID- 19 TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS Provide advisory and technical support in developing national a-FAD programmes Developed the content and delivered a-FAD training workshops A series of seven short awareness and training videos on a-FAD assembling and deployment has been produced. ACTIVITIES IN PROGRESS Continue to support safety at sea, review small craft legislation SPC developing web-based tool that would assist FAD practitioners calculate length of ropes, floatation system and hardware for intended FAD site depth/s https://www.spc.int/CoastalFisheries/FAD/FadHo me/RopeLengthCalculator Producing nearshore fishing methods manual, many methods for small vessels, large and small pelagic (mackerel, flying fish) and squid Fishing methods manual will be supported by a series of short videos demonstrating the methods
NEW AND COMPLEMENTARY INITIATIVES Weather / acoustic buoys, GPS tracking systems attach to FAD. Inform fishers of FAD location and should FAD break loose, practitioners could retrieve FAD. Exploring alternative small-scale fishing methods to catch small pelagic fish (anchovies, sprats, fusiliers, sardinella, herrings). These are currently underutilized species.
MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO: Note the progress to date. Advise FAME on priority support needs to assist/enhance national anchored FAD strategies, capacity, and monitoring (catch, effort, socio-economic benefits). Provide preliminary advice on new, complementary initiatives; the use of GPS trackers and/or acoustic buoys attached to anchored FADs and new fishing technologies targeting underutilised small pelagic resources.
