  1. Electricity Show and Tell 14 April 2024

  2. May 2024 1.9MW datacentre load @23p / kWh = 10.5K/day = 3.8M /year Motivation (I) OF STRATEGIC CONCERN TO SCD 1900kW load@162 gCO2/kWh =304Kg carbon per hour In the UK, average CO2 emissions per car are 132.0 grams per km. 2,300Km car mileage per hour The datacentre operation costs 3.8M/year in electricity Budget pressure The datacentre produces 2663 tons CO2 per year Societal pressure UKRI policy SCD need to be able to demonstrate we are taking this matter seriously

  3. MOTIVATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP Demand for Scientific Computing Cycles is rising Datacentre load is rising Nevertheless we have many projects underway make more efficient use of compute / electricity Today: Survey what work underway Increase visibility to facility sharing Start to build a more strategic view of our various activities Agenda Project show and tell Next step discussions

  4. My Project EB: Cut Electricity by 20%! I need to build a model to understand options/impacts No reliable source of information for: What existing service / subcomponents consumes our 1.9 Mw Power consumption of new kit turning up (service/subcomponent) Power consumption of planned phase out (service/subcomponent) I have: Per rack Snapshot of power draw (from operations) (xls) Per rack allocation of hardware to service / subcomponent(netbox) Inconsistent location schemes Days of work, physical inspection of racks etc Eventually able to provide compelling argument that 20% electricity cut requires 45% reduction in compute capacity.
