  3. Road safety Road accidents are escalating worldwide. Road traffic accidents are amongst the main causes of death in South Africa. The impact is also felt on people who were involved in non-fatal road accidents (anxiety, nervousness and depression). LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 3

  4. Road safety Road accidents can have sever psychological effects on the families of victims. Road accidents have a large impact on communities. In poor communities taxis and busses are used to transport people. The fatalities are usually high when an accident occurs. LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 4

  5. What causes road accidents The driver Speeding and disobeying the traffic rules. Reckless driving or driving under the influence. Road rage or texting while driving. LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 5

  6. What causes road accidents The road Poor road maintenance, potholes. Tyre blowouts and weather conditions. A long boring stretch of road. Curves or bends in the road. Animal crossings. LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 6

  7. What causes road accidents Vehicles Some vehicles are not roadworthy. Driving vehicles without lights making it impossible to see. Worn out shock absorbers especially when cars are overloaded. LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 7

  8. How can road accidents be prevented Don t drink and drive. Observe and obey traffic laws. Refrain from speeding. Adapt driving according to weather . Keep safe travelling distances. When you experience an emergency like a flat tyre, reduce speed. Take a break every two hours when you are travelling long distances. Do not overtake on a solid line.   9. First aid for accidents Safeguard the accident scene. Check if the people are conscious or unconscious . Victims should stay calm and do not move them. Clear airways to ensure breathing Place direct pressure on areas that are bleeding Please note any assistance should be done with the utmost care. If you are unsure do not do something that may cause further injury or harm to the victim. LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE 9

  10. Blood the gift of life the criteria to donate blood Be between the ages of 16-65. Weigh at least 50kgs . Heave healthy red blood cells (haemoglobin). Have decent social behaviour that does not put them at risk of HIV or hepatitis. Not be on certain types of medication. Not have donated blood in the preceding 56 days. Not travelled to malaria areas lately. Not have recently contracted a STD or HIV. Not have had more than one sexual partner in the last 6 months.
