Exploring World Dance: From Concert to Folk

Chapter Eight

(Also refer to Table 8.1 in the textbook)

Defining World Concert/Ritual
Dance and Folk Dance

World dance forms are a part of every country and every culture.
The term “world dance” is used to define dances that are specific to a certain country and
is a more accepted term than “ethnic,” “primitive” and “non-western.”
Some world dances are based in ritual, while some are meant for presentation on the
concert stage.

Folk dances can also be considered world dance forms.

World Concert and Ritual Dance

These dances portray something that is important to a specific culture, such as religion, values,
work ethic or historical information relating to that culture.

Some of these dances were and are used as a form of communication.
Ritual dances are passed down from generation to generation and are often performed as
part of traditional gatherings.
Similar to many countries, Japan has a fascinating history of cultural dances that are
considered concert dance but are also based in ritual.

World Concert and Ritual Dance

Japan:
Bugaku
,
Noh
 and
Kabuki
are forms that date back to the seventh, fourteenth and
seventeenth centuries respectively.
Bugaku
is characterized by unison dancing and is performed to
gagaku
 (graceful,
authorized music).
Noh
is a form of dance drama, which combines dance, music and acting in specific
Noh
plays.
Kabuki
 is a form derived from
Noh
, and also combines dance, music and acting. Kabuki
is much more of a spectacle than
Noh.

World Concert and Ritual Dance

Nigeria:
The many dances of Nigeria vary in style, movements, music, costumes and meaning.
The Yoruba culture places a great emphasis on art, as did their ancestors.
Dance is used as a way to communicate to gods and ancestors

Contemporary Influences on
World Dance

The influence of contemporary society upon world concert/ritual dance is a hotly emotional topic
in all countries that have a strong dance tradition.
At times, these dances are commercialized and performed in ways that are thought will
please a contemporary audience.
Dances, such as Hula, have in the past undergone such commercialization. Today, Hula
is a recognized art form and the master teachers are ensuring that the traditional and
artistic values of Hula remain intact.
World dance forms are performed on every continent. When taken out of the cultural
context in which they were developed and presented on the concert stage, some suggest
that the dance form is then being trivialized. There is, however, a school of thought that
states that it is important to present these dances to a variety of cultures.

Folk Dance

Some forms of folk dances have been performed for many centuries. With the emergence of an
advanced culture in Ancient times, folk dances began to become part of everyday life.

Folk dances were a major part of dancing in sixteenth-century Europe.
Folk dances were created in response to the court ballets. It was not long before the
courts began to borrow movements for their ballets, and folk dances borrowed
movements from the court ballets.
Folk dances provided opportunities for socialization and gave people a sense of
community.
Almost every country has its own folk dances that have been passed down from
generation to generation.

Folk Dance

Countries such as Israel, Greece, France, Mexico, Germany, Scotland, England, Italy, and
Russia have a long history of folk dances.

Greek folk dances can be traced to Ancient times.

Square dancing is considered an American folk dance.
