History of Jazz History of Jazz By: Ella
Origins of Jazz Origins of Jazz Jazz started in the late eighteen hundreds early nineteen hundreds. Jazz originated from an African-American vernacular dance that slaves used to stay fit while traveling. The roots are from African dances and European influence. When jazz was brought to The United States, they added modern ballet and tap into it.
Famous Early Jazz Dancers Famous Early Jazz Dancers Jack Cole Jack was considered the Father of Jazz dance technique. Mr. Cole began as a Modern dancer but switched to jazz during The Great Depression. He was the first to combine popular jazz moves and modern ethnic moves. Katherine Dunham Katherine, known as Matriarch of black dance, founded the first Modern Dance Company. She also created body isolations and incorporated it in Jazz and other dances. Katherine had a huge impact on jazz moves, and you can see her technique in every jazz dancer today. Lester Horton Lester developed his own type of dance while he was alive, and he was good at changing Native American dances and putting them into popular dances including jazz. His work is shown in many dances you know today.

How Jazz Has Changed How Jazz Has Changed Over the past hundred years, Jazz has changed in many ways. Here is a comparison. Today jazz is not just the African American Vernacular dance that came to the United States, but a dance that has ballet, tap and modern. It has so much ballet incorporated into it that at most modern day studios you have to take ballet for at least two years to be able to do jazz. Another difference is the shoes. In older times jazz shoes were high heels, but now they are flexible black shoes that are easy to dance in. One more change is jazz is more hip-hop than it was back then. Because of that, we now have different clothing we wear in jazz. In this day in age we wear a lot more shirts and skirts, maybe a casual dress, for a big performance, but back then they wore really pretty dresses that were sometimes hard to dance in. Jazz has changed many ways in the past hundred years. V.S.
