  2. IRR 4500 SERIES IR-RIFLECTIVE PIGMENTS WHY? A surface hit by solar radiation geenrally: - is tepid, if is WHITE - BURNS, if is BLACK White is noy always an option. Surface are required to be often colored, even with dark shades. In this case, the pigment selection is not anymore free, being the color a matter of determined absorption in the visible area of the solar irradinace spectrum. In order to achieve a COLD SURFACE, is necessary to choose specific pigments that reflect light in the near infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum (IR pigments). 3. IRR 4500 SERIES IR REFLECTIVE COLORANTS WHY? A complete functionality of IR pigments depends not only by its chemistry, but also on: Pigment particles size and relating pigment granules distribution curve. Aiming at this WE HAVE DEALT ON PARTICULAR SUPPLY SPECIFICATIONS WITH PIGMENT PROCEDURES. Fair dispersion and controlled grinding of pigments, in order to get a stable structure of primary crystals, without breaking it. 6. IRR 4500 SERIES BENEFITS ENERGY SAVING Heat is generated by absorpion of terrestrail solar radiation. It is transferred through materials by conduction and to the internal environemnt by convection, with successive increased energy consumption for the cooling system. CONSEQUENCES: o URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT o ENERGY REQUIREMENT o ATMOSPHERE POLLUTION AND CO2 PRODUCTION o GLOBAL WARMING IMPACT COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 6

  7. IRR 4500 SERIES EXTERIOR WALL PAINTS AND FACADE THERMAL INSULATION SYSTEMS Medium to dark shades light from the sun and heat themself Systems consisting in exterior thermal insulation are made of a considerable number of different materials. Eah material with a singular expansion coefficinet. Thermal variation may cause system strains, in the worst case up to the limit of cracking or deformation of the final top coat substrate. Repeated softening and successive hardening of material provoke water and dust absorption, with a quick deterioration of polymeric matrix, in addition to downgrade of insulating substrate. Therefore, IS NECESSARY TO HEDGE OVERHEATING OF SURFACES COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 7

  8. IRR 4500 SERIES EXTERIOR WALL PAINTS AND FACADE THERMAL INSULATION SYSTEMS Pigments of the IRR 4500 series solve or minimize such problems. Considering a black top coat, as border example: - MUST HAVE LOW REFLECTION OF LIGHT IN THE VISIBLE PART AREA OF THE SPECTRUM (400-700 nm) TO BE BLACK MUST REFLECT ENERGY UP IN THE HIGHER PART OF THE INFRARED SPECTRUM TO BE COLD In case of similar colors, those formulated with traditional pigmwnts present extremely different reflectance and higher surface temperatures than those containig IR-reflective pigments. - COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 8

  12. IRR 4500 SERIES SOLAR IRRADIANCE SOLAR ENERGY, measured at terrestrial surface, consists of three types of radiation; ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared, depending on the wavelenght range. ENERGY CONTRIBUTE RADIATION WAVELENGHT EFFECT UV 300 - 400 3 % Organic material degradation Colors seeing and recognition VISIBILE 400 - 700 42 % NIR (near infrared) 700 2500 55 % Terrestrial heating COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 12

  14. IRR 4500 SERIES TECHNICAL OUTLINES A white (or light) surface exposed to solar radiation might reach cooler temperature comparing to a darker color surface, near to black or black. In this case the object may even burn by touch. The reason lies on the interaction between the surface and infrared rays emitted by the sun (NIR near infrared). Recent COOL ROOFS research in the USA have demonstrate that, comparing pigments of the same shade (therefore same lightness), the temperature depends on the chemistry of the pigments. It is a common procedure to consider lightness and reflection coefficients only in the visible area of the spectrum, while choosing a surface shade. This criteria is becoming restrictive and and not correspondent to reality, since it excludes the amount of NIR energy absorbed and transformed in heating. THERE S NO RELATION BETWEEN LIGHTNESS AND OVERHEATING COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 14

  15. IRR 4500 SERIES TECHNICAL OUTLINES Surface temperature is independent of lightness (comparing same oclors sshade) and can be reduced by using IR reflecive pigments (COOL COLORS), able to react to environment changes, reflecting NIR rays. for this reason IRR 4500 COLORANTS have been formulated with pigments also known as SMART PIGMENTS COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 15

  16. IRR 4500 SERIES TSR TSR, TOTAL SOLAR REFLECTANCE, is a measure of the amount of incident solar energy reflected from a surface. TSR is expressed as a percentage. A high TRS value shows an efficient reflection of solar energy, while a low TSR percentage means a strong tendency to ewwnergy absorption, and consequent surface overheating. TITANIUM DIOXIDE REFLECTANCE TSR: 85% TSR: 85% COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 16

  17. IRR 4500 SERIES TSR The irradiated energy is measured in the range between 250 nm and 2500 nm. The integral of percent reflectance multipled per solar irradiance is divided by the integral of the solar irradiance in that range. Result is TSR (percentage). COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 17

  19. IRR 4500 SERIES REQUIREMENTS ORGANIC PIGMENTS are transparents to NIR rays. It means that they don t absorb nor reflect energy. In the case employment in coating products, the application of a primr/sealer becomes A FOCAL POINT It is very important to use, in any case, a WHITE primer/sealer. If this solution results impracticable for any reason, it is necessary to employ IRR 4500 series colorants also in the pigmentation of the primer/sealer. In fact, light waves hitting a surface might be reflected, refracted or diffracted. If a primer/sealer is applied, refracted and diffracted waves would pass through the first level, meeting the primer/sealer as a further barried to absorption. With such solution, light rays are reflected again with a considerable improvement of the wished results. COLORIFICIO MIGLIAVACCA 1919 SRL 19
