Consultation on the revised Study Design 24 May 2021: consultation draft of the VCE Literature Study Design published for public feedback 24 May to 19 July 2021: consultation period July/August/September: review panel read and discussed the feedback and revised the Study Design Additional input from independent reviewers, academics and Literature teachers.

Unit 1 Unit 1, Outcome 1: Reading practices No substantial changes Strong foundation for VCE Literature over many years Unit 1, Outcome 2: Exploring literary movements and genres Includes literary movements
Unit 2 Unit 2, Outcome 1: Voices of Country Positive feedback on the consultation draft Additional consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers, advocates and academics Language has changed First Nation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Representation of reconciliation Unit 2, Outcome 2:The text in its context Limited revisions
Unit 3 Unit 3, Outcome 1: Adaptations and transformations Very few revisions Addition of close analysis Unit 3, Outcome 2: Developing interpretations Removal of resistant readings , broadened to one substantial supplementary reading which can endorse, resist or contest Assessment offers flexibility for teachers to assess this outcome through one task or two
Unit 4 Unit 4, Outcome 1: Creative responses to text Largely unchanged in content Moved from Unit 3 into Unit 4 Provides a balance of examinable skills through the curriculum Unit 4, Outcome 2: Close analysis Largely unchanged in content Assessment reduced to one response to one text
Text selection Teachers are advised that any text selected for and taught in Units 1 and/or 2 CANNOT be selected for and taught in Units 3 and 4 Five texts must be selected for Units 3 and 4 from the annual VCE Literature Text List The adaptation of one set text is a sixth text Teachers may formally assess only four of the five texts selected from the VCE Literature Text List
Skills Explicit skill sets for each outcome in Unit 3 and Unit 4 For example, from Unit 3, Outcome 1: develop and produce analytical responses to texts identify and analyse similarities and differences in the texts under consideration, exploring ideas, structures, features, forms and language select and use textual evidence to illustrate and support assertions and interpretations interweave the exploration of texts under consideration to foreground comparison and contrast as the key element of analysis plan, create and refine a response that is expressive and fluent
Publication of support materials Support materials (formerly called Advice for Teachers) for the Study Design will be published in April 2022 Sample examination for VCE Literature will be published November/December 2022 on the VCAA website along with examination specifications and expected qualities
Implementation and professional learning Two live webinar presentations with current Literature teachers sharing their understandings of the Study Design and the teaching and learning programs they have developed, assessment programs. Live Q&A sessions following those webinars
Implementation and professional learning Ongoing support for teachers through an implementation program of on demand videos, webinars and other professional learning activities More details about this will be made available over the coming months
