General information about the university . Formerly established in 1972, the Merchant Maritime Institute became a civilian institution in 1990 and in 2000 changed its name into Constanta Maritime University. Presently it is a public university accredited by the Romanian Quality Assurance Agency, being granted the highest awarding degree: most prominent level of confidence for quality assurance. There are currently around 4100 students enrolled at Constanta Maritime University and 130 teaching staff. Accreditation and Recognition The university, as well as all study programs, are being regularly verified and accredited by the Ministry of Education and Research though the Romanian Quality Assurance Agency. The university has been granted the highest awarding degree: most prominent level of confidence for quality assurance. The Romanian Naval Authority performs yearly audits and checks the full compliance of the study programs with the mandatory requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Manila). CMU has also been audited by international agencies, such as Bureau Veritas Quality International (UKAS) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). In 2015 the Japan Maritime Center has recognized CMU as a certified institution under the System of Recognition for MET institutions. Sequel to this recognition, CMU graduates may join the Japanese fleet without undergoing additional tests and acknowledgements. The university has completed the accreditation process of its Dynamic Positioning Training Center in cooperation with the Nautical Institute. The accreditation was obtained in September 2015. As such CMU also provides DP training courses to interested parties in the offshore industries.
Accreditation and Recognition In August 2016 Constanta Maritime University and Shanghai Maritime University (P.R. of China) have signed a Double Degree Agreement on Master of Science program in Maritime Advanced Engineering. In October 2016 the Danish Maritime Authority has accredited CMU to provide a course on Danish Maritime Law & Safety Para 16. CMU is approved to carry out the following Maritime Education and Training Courses: Working environment training course for members of the safety group in merchant vessels; Danish maritime law, ship administration and working environment for foreign masters; Danish maritime law for foreign senior officers, except masters. In December 2016 CMU has become a Marlins Approved Test Center. English language testing and certification is now available for Romanian and foreign students.
