Reading questions and extract first Once you know what each question is going to ask you, read the extract and highlight things that you could use in the answers.

Look in detail at this extract from lines 6 to 11 of the source. How does the writer use language here to describe the effects of the storm? The writer uses aggressive verbs like lashing to highlight how the storm is aggressive and wants to cause harm and destruction. Perhaps lashing could imply that the storm wants to cause a punishment against the landscape and other parts of nature in a purposeful way. Moreover it could suggest how the storm is repeatedly striking and hitting parts of nature because it is a present tense verb which encourages the reader to believe that the storm has an unstoppable frightening force. Moreover the writer uses personification when it says the roaring Pacfic Ocean. The verb roaring makes the storm seem like it is a vicious predator like a lion which intimidates and frightens others. Moreover this sound is loud to highlight how vulnerable the storm can make humans like Alex feel in its closeness to it. By using this personification it influences the reader to feel uneasy because the protagonist is close to the dangerous powerful force of the storm.

At the start of the text the writer hasnt started with a typical equilibrium because it starts in the middle of a nightmare where our protagonist is startled by a nightmare. This creates a sudden start to the text to create unease for the reader. Also it encourages the reader to feel curious about why Alex is having such horrible nightmares about his mother being carried way. As the text develops, a sense of foreboding is heightened by the vicious storm outside and then there is a key point in the middle of the text when we learnt that Alex s mother is ill when it says There had been a lot of days like that since his mother got sick . Now, at this point, the reader understands the feeling of worry and the reasons behind Alex s nightmares and sympathy has now been created by the writer alongside more curiosity for why Alex s mother is sick. The text shifts towards the end because we are no longer only focused on Alex; we see his interaction with his family when it says Alex was angry with his father, sisters, life in general . This anger allows the reader to understand why there was a blackbird at the start that Alex stood helplessly watching; the blackbird was a symbol of death and as the text has developed we have learned that Alex feels that he cannot stop death from taking his mother.
