Understanding Healthwatch: Championing Public Voice in Health and Social Care
Healthwatch, established under the Health and Social Care Act 2012, serves as an independent advocate for the public in health and social care matters. It operates nationally through Healthwatch England and locally through various Healthwatch organizations. Key functions include providing information, monitoring quality, and engaging with service providers. Services covered encompass NHS and social care services for all age groups. Healthwatch also gathers evidence, conducts Enter and View visits, and runs information services to support the public.

Who we are Healthwatch was created by the Health and Social Care Act 2012. Healthwatch is an independent champion for the public for both health and social care. It exists at both a national level Healthwatch England and a local level Healthwatch. The establishment of a local Healthwatch organisation for each local council in England. Healthwatch is intended to strengthen the collective voice of users of health and social care services and members of the public, both nationally and locally. 2
Functions Providing information, advice and signposting Seat on local Health and Wellbeing Board Escalating issues nationally via Healthwatch England and CQC Monitor quality and patient experience Report evidence and concerns to commissioners and service providers Act as a Consumer Champion and promoting and supporting the involvement of people in the development of local care services 3
Services covered All NHS services, including those commissioned through Integrated Care Systems, NHS trusts serving the residents of the area; and primary care Social care services for adults, children and young people commissioned or delivered by the Local Authority Excluded from this is the monitoring and scrutiny of services for children and young people) 4
Gathering Evidence and working with others Visiting people in their communities Working with existing groups, networks and organisations Events Pop ups 5
Information and Signposting Service Often, people get in touch with us because they ve not been able to get an answer to a query elsewhere. We offer a supportive voice and have local knowledge and insight into services that are rapidly changing and evolving. We offer a free information and signposting service! 0800 298 5331 6
Enter and Views Enter and View visits are carried out under section 221 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012. Healthwatch can enter certain health and social care premises to view the care being provided. All Enter and View locations are identified through feedback from residents of the borough and those that use the services. 7
Current and future projects Long COVID (across BHR) This is driven by HW England but there is also a local need. Report has been completed and will be shared at a later date. Dental Services (part 2) signposting and information Maternity services a piece of work which is taking place across North East London Healthwatch. Health Visiting services in Barking and Dagenham Healthy Living Report (finalising findings, meeting taken place with Community Solutions. ) Project on EHCP and London Ambulance Service due to start in the coming weeks 8
