About Steven Oliver Steven Oliver is an Indigenous poet and rapper, actor, singer, dancer and writer. He was the creative force behind the highly successful ABC show, Black Comedy . Oliver is known for his ability to use creative form in his advocacy for social change. He shares his Indigenous identity through many forms of storytelling. Real challenges many of the social narratives that have been constructed about in light of what it means to be a true or real Aboriginal.
Pre-listening/reading questions 1.What are some existing cultural narratives or ideals about Indigenous Australians? 2.Who perpetuates these narratives? What is their purpose and who is their audience? 3.Explore the connotations of the word Real with a peer. How can this word s meaning be understood? Dot point 3 -5 ideas. 4.How can contemporary composers redefine outdated narratives and cultural ideals? 5.Why is it important for Indigenous composers to assume advocacy roles for contemporary Australian narratives?

When you have finished, compare your deconstruction with a peer. This is a great opportunity to solidify your understanding of the poem and add to your notes!
