A Level Fine Art Summer Coursework Task Brigg Sixth Form Purpose/Introduction: In order to get you fully prepared for the A Level Fine Art course, we have set you the following task to complete over the summer. This will allow you to continue to experiment and to practise and develop your skills. You will be using the photographs, drawings, notes and materials gathered following this task to form the initial starting points for your A Level coursework. The theme for the summer A Level coursework project for September 2021 is Seaside. Tasks Set: Task 1 to take awide series (this means 20 40+pics)of good quality photographs exploring the theme (remember at this stage you are gathering ideas so you don t need to focus on one thing straight away, the theme Seaside is huge explore it!) Explore taking close- up textures exploring the theme some suggestions you could look at for this are; shells, fish/crabs, driftwood, Rust, Peeling paint, rope, the sea, sand, grasses etc. You could look at lots of textures and then focus in on the most interesting. Explore taking photographs exploring the nostalgia/memories of the seaside some suggestions you could look at for this are; donkeys, the promenade, the pier, boats, beach huts, deck chairs, buckets spades and beach , traditional gifts/postcards/shops, traditional seaside foods like ships, rock, candyfloss. Explore photographing beach landscapes some suggestions you could focus on are; taking photographs of the sea in different weather, photographs of the sea/beach at different times of the day, take photographs of different beaches, isolated beaches or tourist beaches.
Tasks Set Task 1 continued .. Explore photographing and exploring people in connection to the beach, some suggestions for how you might explore this are; small groups of people/your family at the beach, fisherman, people working at beach related places i.e. the donkeys/deckchairs, seaside shops etc., you may look at isolation and photograph individuals stood on their own, you could look at people in water at the beach etc. Task 2: To work from your photographs to develop the following drawings Working from one of your photographs to develop a drawing in pencil Develop a drawing of one of your photographs on tea stained or brown parcel paper using pen Chose a close-up section of one of your images and draw this on a larger scale use a coloured media to develop it (you could use watercolour, acrylic, pencil crayon, a mix of more than one!) Develop a fourth drawing on a collaged background in your choice of mixed media you could use newspaper, or just torn and reassembled paper Explore photographing objects to do with decay in connection to the beach; you could for this explore taking photographs exploring the effect of the tide on objects/the land such as; cliffs, the sand banks, the wave breaks, the literal decay of the British seaside through closed or worn looking shops, it could be the environment and rubbish/pollution at the beach that you focus on.
Tasks Set Task 3: To collect actual objects/things/found images of interest to also work from or use within your artwork. For example you may gather pieces of driftwood/shells/stones. You might collect postcards or souvenirs, beach related food to work from. You may want to collect rubbings of objects to record their textures. You might collect lost objects you find at the beach etc. Work from your objects to produce the following drawings; Develop a drawing of one of your gathered objects using pencil Develop a second drawing from the same or a different object using pencil and pen/ink Develop a third drawing from a chosen object in your choice of media. Task 4: Develop sketches/developed studies of work of artists that interest you/ who explore ideas you could connect to the theme: There are some suggestions of artists you could look at on the next page...but feel free to look for Others that interest you too..... Research about the artists you choose. Find out about their background and what informs their work. Research their methods and processes. Analyse examples of their work
Task 4: continued..... To develop your own ideas analyse and break down how they achieve effects in their work Produce your own artwork (use your earlier photos and drawings) and start to explore adding techniques or ideas from the artists to develop your work. When is the work required by: Your first lesson in September 2021 fully completed...
