Getting started: how to use this guide to help you set effective personal objectives The process to set your objectives Setting goals in DeakinAchieve Maximising your contribution to Deakin Step 1 Choose your objectives Realising LIVE the Future 2020 What Understand how you can contribute to LIVE the Future 2020 and your faculty/portfolio strategy? Your objective setting process should begin by asking how can I contribute to the university? While not every role can equally contribute to all aspects of Live the Future 2020, you should use the objective setting process to think about how you can contribute to some aspects of the strategy. This document will guide you through the steps needed to define your personal goals (objectives and behaviors) for the year, a critical part of DeakinAchieve - My Performance and Development Program. Think about the most relevant areas of focus for your personal objectives Identify the exemplar objectives from the list that are relevant to your individual contribution Learning Offer a brilliant education where you are and where you want to go Ideas Make a difference through world class innovation and research Why It is recommended you set: - At least 4 performance objectives - At least 2 behavioural objectives - A maximum of 6 objectives is allowed for each. Setting meaningful objectives will support you to fulfil your potential, but also defines what it will mean to contribute to the success of Deakin. Agreeing to meaningful objectives with your manager will allow you to prioritise your work throughout the year. Value Strengthen our communities, enable our partners and enhance our enterprise Experience Delight our students, our staff, our alumni and our friends Step 2 Tailor your objectives Areas of focus Consider your personal ambitions - how can a growth mindset help you achieve your goals? These objectives won t cover every aspect of your position description, but rather focus on the key objectives that will have the biggest impact to the university. The following areas of focus can provide you with guidance on the different ways in which you can assess your role s contribution to Deakin. You should aim to set of objectives across a number of the areas of focus. Think about who you can work with in order to create success for yourself and others? How Financial How can I improve the financial well being of the university? Customer How can I improve the experience of my customers (students/staff)? Step 3 Review your objectives The objectives are to be agreed with your manager and entered into DeakinPeople. More information on the DeakinAchieve annual cycle can be found at <Link to DeakinAchieve>. Check that your objectives meet the SMARTA criteria, and upload them into DeakinPeople Process How can I improve the the way we work? People How do I maximise the effectiveness of my team? 3

A growth mindset is key to developing your talent and capabilities. When setting objectives, focus on the skills you will need to learn and develop in order to achieve your goals. The SMARTA method is the most effective way to write objectives that are useful and meaningful: b d Specific Clarity around the what , why , and how Measureable Can it be measured and tracked? Which area of focus can you contribute to? What is the strategic area you can support? Your Deakin network Achievable Is the objective within your control? a b Relevant Does it align to Deakin s goals and your goals? The achievement of your individual objectives will contribute to our collective success. When setting your objectives, consider how you will engage with your Deakin network to achieve your objectives, as well as contribute to the success of others. Time Bound Is there a clear time frame attached? Who can you work with to create success? What skills can you learn and develop? c d Agreed Has this been discussed with your manager? Setting your standards A tailored SMARTA objective: To enhance the student experience in the library I will make sure that that 95% of research requests are completed within 3 days. I will do this through further developing my technical knowledge on business school research publications, and will engage with business school academic staff to understand frequent research requirements. Deakin Values Good objectives will focus assessment on the value and impact of achievement, and will provide you with the ability to progress through objectives. Each goal should be set with a standard in mind: The Deakin Values define what we stand for as individuals and as a university community. While we must live by all the values, we may want to focus on different ones each year. What is reasonable, given where you are at in your individual development cycle, and your level of experience and qualifications? Following the process An Administrative Assistant may view their contribution to these key elements of LIVE the future 2020 strategy: Value - Through delivering services that enhance employee productivity Experience - Through providing services that delight students and staff Step 1: Choose your objective Assess your individual contribution And see these two key areas as the most relevant to focus their objectives on: Customer - Providing excellent customer service and general advice to students and staff Process - Efficiently coordinating a range of administrative tasks From a behavioural perspective this year they choose to focus on behaviours that support Deakin s values of Excellent and Ethical. From the exemplar objectives index, they could select the ones that link to the specific elements of the strategy and area of focus (e.g. Value/Customer or Experience/Process) or they can select from others. Identify the exemplar objectives from the list that are relevant to your individual contribution Remember, you don t have to use the examples, they are just there to provide a starting point. Step 2: Tailor your objective Adjust the objective to suit your goals Consider their personal ambitions and how a growth mindset can help them to achieve their goals, they may have identified the need to develop proficiency with new administrative tools and programs. Thinking about who to work with in order to create success for themselves and others, they have recognised that developing relationships with other individuals in similar administrative functions and sharing best practice will help to deliver collective success. Step 3: Review the result Check the objective meets the SMARTA criteria They then review their objectives against the SMARTA criteria and enter them into DeakinPeople.
