  1. Briefly tell someone about an experience with submission that brought blessing to your life.

  3. Mark 1The Baptism & Temptation of Jesus

  4. Mark 1:9-13 9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. 12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

  6. Luke 7:29-30 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus words, acknowledged that God s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

  8. Matthew 3:13-15 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.14But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented.

  9. Why was Jesus baptized? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. (Matthew 3:15)

  10. Why did John need to baptize Jesus? John 1:32-34 Then John gave this testimony: I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. 34I have seen and I testify that this is God s Chosen One.

  11. Why did Jesus need to be baptized by John? Matthew 3:15 Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.

  12. Righteousness = to conform to the will and nature of God Hebrews 10:5-7 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7Then I said, Here I am it is written about me in the scroll I have come to do your will, my God.

  14. Mark 10:38 You don t know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?

  15. Repentance is an act of submission.

  16. Living a life of Gods purposes will be a life of SUBMISSION.

  17. Living in submissive surrender to the will of God will not be easy but it will be worth it!

  18. Mark 1:12-13 12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

  19. Hebrews 5:7-8 7During the days of Jesus life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.8Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered .

  20. Submission is the starting-gate, the race and the finish line of a life surrendered to the will of God.

  21. Wilderness Truths about Temptation Matthew 4:3 The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. 4Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  22. Wilderness Truths about Temptation Jesus 1st Temptation The temptation: To see physical desires as primary, spiritual needs as secondary. The Truth: Our primary needs are not physical but spiritual.

Wilderness Truths about Temptation Matthew 4 8) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9) All this I will give you, he said, if you will bow down and worship me. 10) Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.

  24. Wilderness Truths about Temptation Jesus 2nd Temptation The Temptation: test God rather than trust Him. The Truth: God s process is more important than my impatience.

Wilderness Truths about Temptation Matthew 4:5-7 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 7 Jesus answered him, It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.

  26. Wilderness Truths about Temptation Jesus 3rd Temptation The Temptation: something other than worship of God can deliver what I want or need most. The Truth: only worship of and service to the true God will bring us what we need most in life.
