  1. Supporting Kids in Peru (SKIP) Addy Lorenzo

  2. SKIP The organization served a low-income neighborhood outside of Trujillo, Peru called El Porvenir. At first, the organization provided tutoring for children from low-income backgrounds but then expanded to provide financial support, parenting workshops as well as after school classes and activities for students Non-profit organization founded in 2004 by two social workers from the UK

  3. Summer 2018 5th Grade Math and Spanish Teacher Psychologist Assistant: Led a classroom of 20 fifth graders The only source of education and tutoring for a lot of students Students dealt with instability and many volunteers coming and going Aided two students in a kindergarten classroom Ran one-on-one sessions to focus on releasing stress and practicing concentration

  4. Connection to CFS I saw different ways in which an organization can provide aid and support to not only children but also families The nature of the relationship between children and their families appeared complicated and very specific to their involvement in the organization I noticed the role that parent involvement plays in a child s life

  5. Challenges It s difficult to judge whether you re being helpful There were some boundaries that the organization crossed in the aid that it provided to families Other volunteers were not conscious of their white savior complex

  6. Thank you!
