  1. LO to write an opening to your story.

  2. LO. To write an introduction to a Science fiction story Now you have got the description of your science fiction creature and your story plan you are going to write an introduction to your story. Look again at the openings on the slides from yesterday. Ive added some more WAGOL s on the next slides for you to look at. Read through all the openings and see which one you like best and why.

  3. So which idea are you going to use for your story? a futuristic or space-themed setting? a main character or creature from another world or time (or someone travelling there)? a dilemma and a resolution? dialogue to create atmosphere and to move on the action? characters feelings being shown to build tension, e.g. his heart thumped, her breathing quickened? short, snappy sentences for effect? imaginary, futuristic terminology, e.g. robotron, galacto-shoes?

  4. The sun slipped behind the distant hills, painting the mountains red and black. Shadows lengthened, deepening the darkness. Wind whispered through the grass as if praying. Wearily, Tom and Jez picked up their fishing gear. It was late and they knew that they would be in trouble. But holidays only came once a year and they were just a mile from the cottage where they were staying. Come on, mumbled Jez, picking up his rod and turning to go. At that moment, the boys froze. From somewhere overhead they heard a low whirring sound. Half a mile away a glowing light appeared. It streaked towards the forest and then hovered, casting beams of brilliant light down into the dark trees. The boys turned to stare at each other. They were both thinking the same thing aliens! Tugging them deeper and deeper into the forest, the strange lights shone down like silvery ropes. Without warning, there was a rush of roaring wind that tore at the trees. Then the lights began to flicker in a mesmerising pattern.

  5. ABang! All the lights on the console exploded, creating sparks like a supernova. The cockpit became silent and dark. What did you do? asked Quizilika. I pressed that yellow button, confessed Zolani miserably, the one the Emperor told us not to. It had been a week since the aging, widowed, childless Emperor of Tetrabilia had sent out a royal proclamation declaring that he was exhausted and intended to abdicate, leaving his empire to whomever showed that they were worthy of it. He had suggested that candidates might want to consider how they were going to solve the empire s energy crisis: Finding a proven solution to this issue will almost certainly result in the discoverer becoming my successor. Emperor Tudorian had stated in his speech, which had been broadcast on all channels to all of his eager citizens.

  6. B They were ready, after a manic changeover of modules the astronauts were now back safely strapped into the limping, damp, sick Odyssey module. The astronauts silently contemplated the final leg of their horrendous journey. All too well they knew the chance of success was slim as they had no real idea of what damage had actually been caused to the delicate spacecraft. Re-entry to Earth was tricky at the best of times but in this case, it was near impossible. However, failure was not an option success was a must. Buckle-up, let s do this! commanded Jim, although he looked and sounded calm, he was fully aware of the risks involved, a small bead of sweat slowly trickled down his pale tired face. All controls have been checked commander, reported Jack. You could hear the radio crackling in the background as mission control acknowledged the report. (Continued on next slide)

  7. B continued As the rocket fired forward the crew looked serious, Freddo was hugging himself to keep warm, rocking slightly in his chair. Hang in their buddy, you ll be home before you know it, Jim spoke kindly as he knew Fred was on his last legs; he was struggling to manage the pain. Fred smiled weakly at Jim and said At least we will feel some heat for the first time to 5 days if we hit re-entry right! Not too much I hope- I don t want to land looking like fried chicken Jim grimly stated. Silence once again shrouded the module. We have a go on re-entry, crackled the radio, communication blackout commencing in 5,4,3,2,1- see you on the other side boys .

  8. The colossal strato-cruiser Lamentation hovered 300 meters above The crystal cities of Arosha. This wingless serpent in the sky, was armed with four titanic Juggernaut cannons, capable of starting catastrophic earthquakes. On its bridge stood Chaoswaker Teobach. Resembling a standing mechanical scorpion, he pointed one cable-laden pincer to the city on the viewscreen. Prime the naughts, he croaked. As the city dies, we shall gain the power of life over the entire planet! he boasted, drooling in grotesque delight.

  9. Sheltering from the giants that loomed over the chaotic city, I peered around the corner and watched in horror as hundreds of people tried to escape their inevitable fate. Like mice trying to escape the clutches of a falcon, they scampered in terror through the crumbling square. As the whirring of the enormous vacuums approached, I had to take a chance. I had to run. Run for my life.

  10. The Swallow had been travelling to the space station for over four days now and her passengers had been getting to know each other. The children were the latest recruits to be sent to Earth s Future Astronaut Program; they were to be trained up to be mankind s last hope to find a new home away from Earth s polluted, overcrowded megacities.

  11. Jane McCoy was jolted out of her day dream and looked around the cabin. She was tall for her age with wide, hazel eyes. Her off- white space suit was ill-fitting but she remembered the pride she felt when she was handed her Union Flag patch to attach on her left shoulder. She brushed her hair to one side, a nervous habit. Her hair, which was the colour of muddy water, was cut short but still managed to stick up at odd angles no matter how hard she tried to get it under control. She looked around and saw the girl in the corner of cabin sitting on the floor.

  12. Lo to write an Introduction Now you are going to write the introduction only. It should take about 1-2 paragraphs. Make it exciting/create suspense with something either going wrong or seeing something unusual. Let the reader keep wondering. You can use some of the ideas you have read (use your own words and change some things) or make up your own.

  13. Maybe you are out playing with some friends when something strange happens or maybe you are on your own at home? Give some background to what you are doing and why. Do not go into any of the main story yet.

  14. Off you go Remember to edit it to your very best work. PleaseSend a copy of this work to me. If possible, please type it up, as it is easier for me to read. If not use a black pen rather than pencil is very light on a photo. Make sure you write very neatly and that your letters are formed correctly, or I may have to ask for you to do it again if I can t read it. Thank you. I am looking forward to reading these.
