Racism and Teaching Geography On learning to talk about race and racism
Assumption In this country today structural racism and subtle racist practices exist and persist Question Is one of the structures in question the enacted geography curriculum?
It is not enough . for society and its institutions simply to declare that: They are not racist; They are inclusive; They promote equality and social justice; Geography itself is a subject that has shaken off the yoke of imperialist assumptions and practices? All this counts for nothing, if nothing changes.
What has changed? Arguably, quite a lot The way the Association presents itself is diverse and welcoming. Both children and the teaching workforce are carefully monitored both in the images selected and words used to describe school populations and wider society. However, Geography undergraduate degree courses are overwhelmingly white Geography remains a relatively unpopular option at GCSE and A level for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students A very small proportion of trainee geography teachers are BAME.
The curriculum may be the key (From draft Chapter 1) We think it is impossible to understand contemporary British society without paying attention to issues relating to race and racism . However, in our experience it is quite possible to teach geography in schools without paying such attention .
Reflections of a former Chief Executive Publishing articles, reports, declarations is, on its own, ineffective The right kind of articles (etc.) need to be written - that challenge, engage AND inspire action We need to accept that issue is race and racism is systemic, and not an add on (It is Core rather than Periphery ) What are the issues and challenges that can and do supersede race and racism?
Racism and Teaching Geography Chapter 1 How useful is the idea of racial literacy in geography education? Does the geography education community need to learn to talk more about race and racism? How can this best be achieved?
