Saints Name: Research Report Each student will pick a new name; usually the name of a favorite saint. When Jesus called people to follow Him and serve with Him He often changed their names to show the newness of life to which He called them Simon He renamed Peter Saul He renamed Paul You will research your favorite saint; learn more about how they followed the Lord & why they are a great example to you. 2

Saints Name: Research Report From the Official 2020 -2021 Confirmation Handbook (page 9) SAINT RESEARCH PROJECT AND CONFIRMATION NAME: Grade 9 As part of the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation a student may choose a new name to be added to the name given to them at baptism by their parents. The name that is to be chosen must be the name of a Catholic Saint (e.g. St. Joseph, St. Theresa, etc.) or a notable person from the Old Testament (e.g. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Moses etc.). The Saint or Biblical person should be someone whom the candidate admires and tries to imitate. The Saint then becomes a special patron and a friend of the candidate for life. A candidate may wish to take the same name given to them at baptism. This is an option. In either case, the candidate is asked to do a special Research Project on the Saint or Biblical Person. They are due anytime between now and March 14, 2021. 3

Saints Name: Some Ideas St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not Irish himself. He was born in Scotland and was captured by Irish pirates; after he escaped he eventually returned as a missionary. St. Jerome (who translated the first one-volume Bible from Hebrew and Greek into his native Latin) removed a thorn from a lion s paw and it immediately became his pet. During Lent, Catholics give up eating sweets and treats except on St. Joseph s Day (March 19), when special pastries called zeppole are served, and bread is blessed in his honor. 4

Saints Name: Some Ideas Catholics get their throats blessed every year on the Feast of St. Blaise (February 2) because he miraculously cured a young boy who was choking on a fish bone. St. Lucy is the patron saint for those suffering from any ailment of the eye because she was martyred by the Romans, who plucked out her eyeballs as part of her martyrdom. St. Lawrence the Deacon told his executioners, You can turn me over. I m done on this side, as they roasted him alive on a huge hot gridiron. St. Anthony of Padua is the patron saint for lost items. Catholics say this prayer to find them: St. Anthony, please look around; something is lost and must be found. 5

Information can be gotten from books or the internet. Do not copy or cut and paste information. Do not plagiarize. Reports should include a cover page. Please remember to include your name and date on cover. They are due March 14, 2021. 6

WHY CHOOSE A NEW NAME? After John the Baptist had introduced Andrew to Jesus, Andrew brings Peter to Jesus and they meet for the first time. Yet Jesus looked at Peter and said to him, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas." We can know that the Aramaic name of Simon Peter was Kepha (which means rock) from outside the Gospels. We know his name was given as "Kephas" as it appears in the writings of St. Paul and Clement of Rome. Peter (Petros) is the Greek translation of the name. 7

Saints Name: Research Report The giving of a new name signified the taking on of a new way of life. In the Old Testament a change of name often showed a new relationship with God. For instance, Jacob became Israel and Abram became Abraham when they entered into a new relationship with God. When a person enters into a new relationship with God, it is as if life begins all over again and he/she becomes a new person, so that he/she needs a new name. Another example of this is Saul who became Paul. This is why when some men and women enter Religious life as Brothers, Nuns or Sisters they take (or are given) a new name. It is indicative of their new life and relationship with the Lord. 8

Saints Name: Research Report This is the reason for choosing a new name at Confirmation. It signifies that each of you is a new person with a new commitment to your relationship with God as a member of the Catholic Church. 9

Saints Name: Research Report John is not the only one to mention Simon's name change. Mark 3:16 also states that Christ changed Simon's name to Peter, but does not say when this occurred. Matthew 16:18 associates the change of name with the promise of primacy to Peter, but it does not indicate that the change was made at that time. Interestingly enough, however, the change of name in John occurs in a context of testimony to Jesus' messianic character, (Peter s knowledge of Jesus true identity) even though it is not Peter's testimony. (John's equivalent of the primacy text of Matthew occurs in 21:15-19). 10
