  1. Standards, Training, and Certification in the Wastewater Industry Presented by: Bob Murphy, Sherwin Williams

  2. Introduction The purpose of this webinar is to describe how to properly specify a coating system for a specific substrate, structure, and environment by specifying specific industry standards, training and certifications to ensure a quality project.

  3. What is a Specification? A detailed coating specification is a complex and sometimes confusing document to navigate. Yet, it is the rulebook for QC and QA personnel responsible for inspecting work.

  4. Specification Each coating specification for an industrial structure should start with: SSPC Technical Insight Report: Preparing and Using Protective Coating Specifications SSPC PA 7

  5. SSPC Technical Insight Report: Preparing and Using Protective Coating Specifications The purpose of this report is to describe some best practices for preparing and administering a quality specification for application of high performance protective coatings and linings for the wastewater industry.

  6. Concrete Condition Assessment The concrete structures found in wastewater facilities are exposed to conditions that can lead to rapid deterioration of the concrete surface. It is of utmost importance to evaluate the conditions of the existing structure using a combination of visual inspection and non-destructive testing

  7. Visual Condition Assessment ACI-228.2R, Report on Nondestructive Test Methods for Evaluation of Concrete in Structures ACI-364.1R, Guide for Evaluation of Concrete Structures Before Rehabilitation

  8. Concrete Coating Assessment Guide This technical guide is a field tool for use by concrete coating professionals when assessing the condition of coating systems over concrete surfaces being evaluated for maintenance and repair coating. It is organized according to the steps typically followed in concrete coating condition assessment and contains a special section of color illustrations to support identification of various concrete conditions that may be encountered in the field.

  9. Concrete Condition Assessment Guide

  10. SSPC-PA 1 SSPC-PA 7, Applying Thin Film Coatings to Concrete

  11. Surface Preparation Dual Purpose: Cleaning the surface Roughening the surface

  12. Surface Cleanliness Standards SSPC and NACE issue consensus standards Currently SSPC has issued 13 cleanliness standards NACE is jointly referenced in 7 of the 13 SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6, Surface Preparation of Concrete International Standardization Organization (ISO) also publishes surface preparation cleaning standards ICRI 310.2, Selecting and Specifying Concrete Surface Preparation for Sealers, Coatings, Polymer Overlays, and Concrete Repair

  13. SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6 This standard gives requirements for surface preparation of concrete by methods of: Mechanical Chemical Thermal

  14. SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6 This standard provides information and guidance on: Inspection procedures prior to surface preparation Surface preparation Inspection and classification of prepared concrete surfaces Acceptance criteria Safety and environmental requirements

  15. Inspection Procedures Prior to Surface Preparation Visual inspection Concrete cure Concrete defects Physical damage Chemical damage Contamination Moisture

  16. Surface Preparation Surface cleaning Vacuum cleaning, air blast cleaning, water cleaning, detergent cleaning, steam cleaning Mechanical surface preparation methods Dry abrasive blasting, wet abrasive blasting, vacuum assisted abrasive blasting, centrifugal shot blasting

  17. Surface Preparation Mechanical surface preparation methods (cont d) High pressure water cleaning or waterjetting Impact tools such as: scarifier, scabbler, and a roto-peener Power tools such circular grinder Chemical Flame

  18. Inspection and Classification of Prepared Concrete Surfaces Surface Tensile Strength Coating adhesion ASTM D7234 Surface profile ICRI 310.2 Surface cleanliness pH ASTM D4262 Moisture content ASTM D4263, ASTM F1869, ASTM F2170 Holiday detection ASTM D4787, ASTM D5162

  25. Additional Industry Standards ACI: American Concrete Institute ICRI: International Concrete Repair Institute ASTM International AWWA: American Water Works Association ISO: International Standards Organization

  26. QP Certifications

  27. What is QP Certification? A proven way for facility owners and specifiers to evaluate contractor capabilities to perform quality blasting and application work for coating projects Certified contractors will have the experience, knowledge and equipment to produce high quality work

  28. Why Certified Contractors? Certified contractors are experienced with a demonstrated history and competence on protective coatings projects. Assurance that projects will be completed within your specifications. Lower risks of safety, health, and costly environmental compliance violations.

  29. Types of SSPC QP Certification QP 1 Field Application of Coatings QP 2 Field Removal of Hazardous Coatings QP 3 Shop/Fixed Coating Operations QP 5 Coatings Inspection Company QP 6 Contractor Metalizing Certification QP 8 Coating/Surfacing to Concrete QP 9 Architectural Paints and Coatings

  30. Training/Certification Programs Floor Coating Basics Concrete Coating Basics Concrete Coating Inspector Program CCI Supplement Determining the Level of Moisture in Concrete Basics of Concrete Surface Preparation Plural Component Application for Polyureas and High Solid Coatings

  31. Floor Coatings Basics This course is designed to meet the practical training requirements of SSPC-QP 8 Section 4.4, which require that each job crew chief and each QC manager complete a minimum two-day overview of concrete components, coating and surfacing types, and surface preparation and substrate repair techniques based on SSPC consensus standards TU-10, Procedures for Applying Thick Film Coatings and Surfacings Over Concrete Floors.

  32. Concrete Coating Basics This course is designed to provide basic training to contractors and act as a prerequisite for individuals seeking Concrete Coating Inspector Certification. This course also meets the practical training requirements of SSPC-QP 8, Section 4.4, which requires that each job crew chief and each QC Manager complete a minimum two-day overview of concrete components, coating and surfacing types, surface preparation and substrate repair techniques based on SSPC consensus standard TU-10, Procedures for Applying Thick Film Coatings and Surfacings Over Concrete Floors.

  33. Concrete Coating Inspector Program (CCI) The objective of this course is to thoroughly train individuals in the proper methods of inspecting surface preparation and installation of industrial protective coatings on concrete industrial structures and facilities.

  34. CCI Supplement Determining the Level of Moisture in Concrete This certification course covers those skills required to conduct moisture testing of concrete substrates prior to coating application. It defines and explains the steps for measuring moisture in accordance with relevant ASTM Standard Test Methods.

  35. Basics of Concrete Surface Preparation This course defines surface preparation for concrete through a brief review of the steps involved. It then provides an overview of the methods and the standards referenced when preparing concrete for installation of the coating/surfacing.

  36. Plural Component Application for Polyureas and High Solid Coatings This course is designed to train applicators in the application of protective coatings by airless spray using plural component spray equipment. The program focus is on the application of two component high solids, polyurethanes and polyurea coatings in a marine/industrial environment on steel or concrete.

  37. Summary By being aware of industry standards, training and certifications you can properly specify a coating system for a specific environment and structure to ensure a quality project
