The Wates Family Le Loop was created by the William Wates Memorial Trust: helping to keep the most disadvantaged young people away from a life of crime and violence and fulfil their potential. This is achieved by giving grants to charities that engage young people through the mediums of sport, arts and education.
Who was William Wates? Will died during his gap year in Central America as a result of street crime in 1996. His family wanted to do something in his name to make a difference. Le Loop celebrates Will s life and continues his legacy by supporting young people who don t have the advantages in life that many of us take for granted. Will was aware of his privileged background and was keen to help others the aims of the Trust reflect where his interests would have been if he were alive today . Andrew Wates, Will s Father and Chairman of WWMT
Why Le Loop? We created the event in 2006 as a fundraiser, inviting friends and family to challenge themselves to ride stages of the Tour de France. Taking 4 years to recover (!), we did it all again in 2010 and realised that everyone should have the chance to ride the tour. We have run Le Loop (previously known as the Tour de Force ) every year since 2012 . Rick Wates, Chairman of Le Loop and Trustee of WWMT We aim to raise 400,000 each year Le Loop has raised over 3 million for the charities WWMT supports
So where will my fundraising money be spent? I m paying the whole cost of my participation in Le Loop The Trust supports around 22 charities a year, with grants normally lasting 2-3 years. The majority of the charities are located in the South East of England, close to the Trustees. If you are outside London/South East, check the WWMT list of charities http://www.wwmt.org/category/charities/current/ to see if there is a regional project being supported near you that you can focus on. The next slide gives an example of one in Edinburgh. We can provide more material (logos, photos etc) for this slide if you need it. Just let us know.
Pilton Youth and Childrens Project - PYCP Provides range of services and activities for kids aged 5-24 in Pilton, Edinburgh WWMT supports their Project FACE North which aims to deliver a needs-led programme to over 50 young people aged 11-24 years in the early stages of youth crime and at risk of social exclusion Sessions depend on building a trust-based relationship with young people to tackle this offending behaviour/encourage them to take part in more positive activities in their local community FACE North provides activities, education, counselling and both practical and pastoral support
