  1. WHYALLAS GREEN IRON & STEEL Transformation Gavin Hobart GMUSG August 2023

  2. Disclaimer

  3. The problem Global Steel Demand Growth Climate change Steel manufacturing accounts for up to 9 per cent of global CO2 emissions As economies develop, steel consumption is expected to double in the next 30 40 years Many countries already legislating to be carbon neutral by 2050 1.9bn crude steel production in 2021 Compound annual growth rate 2 3% Paris Agreement is limiting global warming to well below 2 C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 C Average steel industry emissions globally = 1.87 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel Takes it to over 3bn tonnes of steel by 2050 Which means if we do nothing then the CO2 generated by the steel industry could increase to 6bn tonnes Impossible without a solution for steel Steel industry contributes 3.5Bn tonnes of CO2 annually 2 WHYALLA | A magnetite hub

  4. A generational opportunity Whyalla A GREENIRON & GREENSTEEL HUB Mining & Steel Making Heritage GFG have a vision to be carbon neutral by 2030 and are actively taking steps towards decarbonisation. This includes modifying and modernising our current Whyalla Iron and Steelmaking technologies Workforce Whyalla is equipped to support a community- based workforce and educate and train the kids of today who will be the future engine room of the transformed Whyalla GREENSTEEL industry. Magnetite Large scale resource that concentrates to a direct reduction (DR) quality to support DRI / EAF production is emerging Renewables South Australia is committed to reaching 100% renewable power by 2030. Whyalla is rich in sun as the and wind to support local renewable investment. Hydrogen SA Government has committed $593m to create a hydrogen facility in Whyalla. future Port Port of Whyalla provides a route to market for this highly globally sought low carbon green iron hub of 4 WHYALLA | A magnetite hub
