DJMH Week 7 Vocabulary Words ENGLISH 8
1. Repulsion -- Hatred or disgust Dr. Jekyll soon felt a strong repulsion to the other personality that lived with him, always growling just under the surface.
2. Mien -- Characteristics which are expressive of someone s attitude or personality Based on his appearance, the young man in the library had a cautious, academic mien.
3. Disconsolate-- Hopelessly sad or forlorn At the funeral, the soldier s best friend handed the disconsolate widow her deceased husband s last handwritten letter.
4. Abject -- Miserable or pitiful The children in the war torn country lived in abject poverty for many years.
5. Traverse -- To travel or move across; to turn or move laterally The explorers traversed the frozen continent of Antarctica in search of new bacteria and frozen organisms within the ice.
6. Explicit -- Clearly defined, specific, or forthright in expression The test proctor gave the students explicit instructions about when and where to write in their test booklets.
7. Doggedly -- To act or do stubbornly or persistently Utterson doggedly pursued the truth about Hyde in hopes of saving his friend Jekyll.
8. Amply -- To a large or great degree The family reunion was amply supplied with food for the many guests who would be arriving for an early lunch.
9. Amiss -- To be out of place Mr. Utterson knew there was something totally amiss in his friend Dr. Jekyll s behavior.
10. Lamentation -- An expression of grief or sorrow; a loud cry When Jekyll realized that the powder had run out and he would no longer be able to control Hyde, he let out such a lamentation that his servants believed he had been murdered in the lab.
