Use of rivers and lakes in Finland’s history

-
As in most countries, transportation on water has been one of the most
important means of transportation
-
Especially for longer distances transportation on water has been crucial
-
Rivers have been important routes for transporting both people and items

-
We have also used different means of transport on lakes from some of
which are still in use
-
During winters it becomes easier to move across lakes and along rivers as
most of them freeze in winter and it becomes possible to cross them by
sled, by skiing or by foot.

Log driving

-
Log driving is a way to transport timber using waterways, mainly clogs
-
It has long traditions in Finnish culture

-
Everyone has the right to transport their timber in waterways, but the
exercise of this right is very strictly regulated in the laws concerning
water.
-
Nowadays it’s not so usual a way of transporting and that’s why people
mostly respect the tradition by attending log driving competitions

Ferries and cable ferries

-
They are used to transport people and essential items such as food
for people who live on islands
-
Some people use ferries to get to school
-
Most ferries are located on the west coast of Finland and also in
Saimaa, the biggest lake in Finland

-
Cable ferries operate between small islands and have been, and still
are, important connections between mainland and the islands.
-
These days some of the cable ferries have been replaced by bridges
and other alternatives

Cruises

-
Very popular in Finland
-
The cruise destination is
usually to Estonia or
Sweden
-
It’s common for Finns to
go on a cruise just for
fun, for example on New
Year’s Eve

-
It’s traditional
for high school
seniors to go on
a cruise to
celebrate the
end of their
studies

Transportation on ice

-
In winter most rivers and lakes freeze and it becomes easier to move
along or across them and obviously the means of transportation
change:
-
During winters people have used skis, sleds and skates to move across
waters.

-
Transportation of items on ice has been crucial especially in the past
but these days other means of transportation have taken over.
-
However, building on islands for example is still something that is
mainly done in winter as heavy loads are easier to move by sled than by
boat
-
Nowadays frozen lakes and rivers are mainly used for leisure time
activities such as skating, skiing and snowmobile driving.
