The animal people choose a leader, is a short story written by in -. It is the tale of a group of animals living harmoniously in their forest home, when they decide it might be time to have a leader. The animals settle on the idea of having a race to determine this. The bigger and stronger animals all feel confident enough to participate, and are determined to win, but so is Wapoose. Wapoose is a tiny rabbit, who insists she also participates, as she felt it was an honor to contest with the other animals. Though the animals lack faith in her victory, she proves herself worthy of being a leader, by helping the other animals in need, and never giving up. Back round Back round info info
Kind Kind Throughout this entire story, Wapoose manages to lead and get to the main goal and staying positive and being kind to the other animals the whole time. While the other animals were upset, they did not win the race, she comforts them and assures them that nobody is judging them. I understand that when all our enemies are directed toward the same goal, there is no need for one to lead. Throughout the entire story, Wapoose show cases her determination from start to end. She does not let other people's opinions on her define her, nor dictate her fate. She continues on with the race, and prove's everyone wrong. In the end, her determination pays off as she finished the race even after it was done and was first pick to be leader even though she declined." Honourable Honourable During the story, when advised to forfit the race, Wapoose refuses as she explained how it wouldn't be honourable to quit the race she promised herself she would complete " It is not honouring the challege if I should stop" pg.77 This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-NC.
Patient Patient Wapoose never loses patience or her temper through this whole ordeal. She manages to keep calm which affected the other animals in a positive way, as she was able to teach them new things and lessons about patience and wisdom " You learn much when you decide to look at things" pg. 80 This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND.
Brave Brave She hoped off after the other creatures, eagle flapped his great wings and settled more firmly on the branch. He admired wapoose. The rabbit was brave and respectful, and would make a remarkable leader pg.77 Even though she was contesting against bigger and stronger animals, this did not affect her as she was determined to finish her goal which shows how brave she was to continue the race, though others did not believe in her at first. Wapoose's wisdom is not seen by the other animals until the very end, because they were so busy judging her physically, then to look at the content inside of her. Her wisdom leads her and the other animals through the race, and she learns new things about wisdom and life along the way which she didn't know before.
AWOK- Spirituality I chose to high light the spiritual aspect of this story, for a few different reasons. Aboriginals use depictions of animals in many of their stories, culture, spiritual beliefs, and more. Different animals represent different things to them, like the raven that represents mischief, the bear that represents leadership, bravery, and courage, and the dog that represents loyalty and companionship. Aboriginal believe that natural objects all have a soul and spirit, and that we are all connected as one. Every animal in this story represents something, which in the end all ties together because the true purpose of the story was about teamwork in the end. The use of a rabbit as the protagonist instead of the bigger and physically stronger animals is important because it shows that you cannot judge a book by it's cover, but only by the content inside.
I chose to highlight the Social responsibility aspect, because to me, this entire story is about exactly that. Wapoose took the time to help her fellow animals through the race instead of taking the short cut on her own. Even though the other animals payed no attention or had no thought of helping each other, she changed that in them, which affected them all in a positive way because they all learned something from the experience. Even though they ended up not wanting a leader, Wapoose still proved she was worthy of being leader, which was unexpected to the other animals.
