  1. Vocabulary Intro

  2. beware To beware is to be very careful and alert. Beware of dangerous weather when a storm siren sounds its warning. What is something you need to beware of in the woods? Why?

  3. damage If you damage something, you harm or hurt it. Hail and strong winds can do a lot of harm. They can damage crops. What can rain damage?

  4. bend To bend is to cause something to curve without breaking it. High winds have caused the trunks of these trees to bend, or curve. How many times can you bend over and touch your toes?

  5. flash A flash is a short burst of light. The flash of lightning bolts lit up the dark night sky. If you see a flash in the sky during a thunderstorm, what should you do?

  6. pounding Something is pounding if it is hitting or hammering again and again. Pounding waves hit the beach hard in a storm. If you heard a pounding noise at the door, what would you do?

  7. prevent If you prevent something, you keep it from happening. Heavy snow may prevent, or stop, cars and trucks from traveling. Why should people try to prevent accidents?

  8. reach If you can reach a place, you can get there. In a flood, water can reach, or go as high as, rooftops. How long do you think it would take to reach the North Pole?

  9. equal If two things are equal, they are the same. The height of the snow is equal to three feet. Name two things that are equal in size.
