Guinea, Beindou

Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the
west by the Atlantic Ocean.
Most people in Guinea live in rural areas (the
countryside). Many depend on agriculture (farming).
A third of the population are going hungry, and are
severely prohibited by poor health and hygiene,
which has resulted in the nation being plagued by
cholera.
Within Guinea, the majority of the population is based
in rural areas and are heavily dependent on
agriculture.
United Purpose’s work in Guinea focuses on
developing people’s skills to feed their families,
educating people about hygiene and sanitation,
helping communities to improve health centres, and
supporting women and girls to improve gender
equality.

The global pandemic has
impacted on the lives of
people around the whole
world. Communities in
developing countries like
Guinea
 have been
particularly affected.
How do you think poorer
countries have been
affected by the
coronavirus pandemic?
What would these
communities need for
their lives to improve
after the pandemic?

Belonging to a community - Cynefin

This is Kankou Keita. She lives in the village of
Beindou, Guinea
She owns a small shop and sells food like rice and
sugar and things that people need like batteries
and cooking oil.
Before the pandemic, her business was doing well
and she was able to support her family. When the
pandemic came the food prices went up and were
too expensive for the people in her community.
Even though it was hard for Kankou Keita as she
wasn’t earning much money, she still tried to help
others in her community during these difficult times.
What would other people in the community say
about Kankou Keita?
The elders? The other shop workers? The children?
Parents?

Approximately 200,000 children in
Wales live in poverty. That is 31% or
nearly one in three!

During the pandemic, in Wales and
across the UK families struggled to
afford to buy food. Community food
banks were set up by people in their
local areas, and this meant that children
didn’t go hungry.

Free school meals debate:
Should the Welsh government pay for
every
child in Wales to have a free
school meal?

What does Marcus Rashford say about it?
