VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Unit 3 Area of Study 3 requirements 1. Students focus on planning an exhibition of artworks from the artists they researched in Area of Study 1 2. Three artists studied and selecting two artworks by each artist. 3. Identify connections between the artists and present the artworks in an exhibition proposal. In this area of study students: research the characteristics of a range of exhibitions and develop a thematic exhibition of artworks research a range of artworks by each artist and select appropriate artworks for the exhibition research a range of exhibition spaces and define the characteristics of the space where the artworks are exhibited research the responsibilities involved in curating an exhibition and propose an exhibition design that has a curatorial intention research and write didactic information that is used throughout the exhibition and that connects the artists and their works.
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Unit 3 Area of Study 3: Connect curate, design and propose On completion of this unit the student should be able to research and plan an exhibition of the artworks of three artists. Outcome 3 Learning structure How are artworks selected and presented for exhibition? What are the characteristics of the different exhibition spaces where artworks are presented? What are the roles of the people involved in curating an exhibition? What is the theme of the exhibition? How will I prepare my own exhibition based on the exhibitions I view? What are the strategies I will use to develop my own exhibition of artworks?

VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Unit 3 Area of Study 3 Teaching and Learning Ideas Plan and participate in a series of on-site excursions or virtual visits to a range of art exhibitions in various types of art spaces Access the chosen exhibitions via guided tours with art industry education staff involved in curating, designing and presenting Find out the intention, development and presentation of each exhibition View online videos and resources about the chosen art exhibitions Collate relevant information about each exhibition in the Visual Arts Journal Examine examples of art exhibition/collection publications such as catalogues, extended wall labels and room sheets. Apply knowledge about exhibition design and curating to plan an exhibition of artworks by three artists they have researched in Unit 3, Outcome 1 in a designated exhibition space during a school coursework task.
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Unit 3 Area of Study 3 Detailed learning example CURATE, DESIGN AND PLAN AN EXHIBITION DRAWING UPON RESEARCH 1. Select a number of thematic exhibitions to visit at a range of exhibition spaces and/or site-specific during Unit 3 2. Prepare for the exhibition visit discuss outcomes, key knowledge and key skills with the gallery staff, devise structured questions in the form of a handout addressing each area of Unit 3 Outcome 3 key knowledge and key skills 3. During the exhibition, encourage each student to document their experiences and gather relevant information 4. After the visit, guide students to research and plan an exhibition for six artworks, identifying two artworks by each of the three artists that they have researched for Unit 3, Area of Study 1 for inclusion. 5. Students apply appropriate curatorial principles and processes based on the understandings they have gained during their exhibition visits in a School-Assessed Coursework (SAC) task.
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Assessment Unit 3 Outcome 3 Research and plan an exhibition of artworks of the three artists who were selected in Area of Study 1, choosing two artworks by each artist. The task must include the following: a description of the exhibition a description of the space where the artworks will be exhibited an exhibition proposal that includes a description of the exhibition design and the intent of the curator an overview of the theme of the exhibition a description of the connections between the selected artworks in the exhibition information about the artists and artworks in the exhibition. The task must be presented with an annotated curatorial exhibition proposal, using one or a combination of the following formats: an oral presentation with written and visual notes annotated visual display digital presentation with written and visual documentation, such as a video presentation an online presentation with written and visual information, such as an interactive website.
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Assessment Example Unit 3 Outcome 3 School Assessed Coursework Task: Plan a thematic, group exhibition. Create a series of structured prompts in a school assessed coursework task that addresses the key knowledge and key skills for Unit 3, Outcome 3. Students respond to the prompts to plan an exhibition design got a hypothetical exhibition space they have visited Part 1: Exhibition wall text Develop didactic introductory information about the the theme of the exhibition, curatorial intention for the project and thematic connections between the six chosen artworks Part 2 : Exhibition wall label Present didactic information about each of the exhibiting artist and artworks in the exhibition.
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Assessment Example Unit 3 Outcome 3 School Assessed Coursework Task: Plan a thematic, group exhibition. Part 3: Exhibition design Define the chosen space/venue/context where the exhibition will be presented Produce an annotated floorplan/sketch/ digital visualization of the exhibition design in the chosen space documenting spatial, practical, aesthetic, environmental and ethical considerations for the presentation of each artwork, and communicating the relationships between artworks.
